We should be aware of how we feel when we're working in high temperatures, as hot weather brings its own set of hazards. Heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are all potential illnesses that we can suffer from when performing work in heat. The higher the humidity level, the more difficult it is for sweat to evaporate and the hotter it feels. This is called the heat index. It is the combination of actual. Air temperature and relative humidity. Heat index affects the likelihood of suffering from a heat related illness. Let's discuss heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke in more detail so you can recognize the symptoms. Heat cramps are muscle cramps that occur due to dehydration and loss of nutrients from excessive sweating in hot environments. Heat cramps are most common in the back, abdomen, legs, or arms. Dehydration can also cause heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, headache, sweaty skin, weakness, cramps. Nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat and fainting. The most serious heat related illness is heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body's temperature regulation system fails to control the body temperature, allowing it to rise to a critical level. Symptoms of heat stroke include not sweating, red hot and dry skin, high body temperature, confusion, convulsions, and fainting. Heat stroke is a life threatening condition. You should call 911 immediately if yourself or your coworkers seem to be suffering from heat stroke. If you recognize the symptoms of heat illness in yourself or others, remember 3 words and take action. Water, rest and recovery. Move to a shaded area with air movement and drink water. Recovery time will vary for each person. Prevention is the key to avoiding illnesses and injuries. What can you do to protect yourself from heat related illnesses? Staying well hydrated is key to preventing heat related illnesses. The signs and symptoms of dehydration are dark urine and less frequent urination. Begin drinking water before working in hot weather and continue during your work day. Rule of thumb, try to drink 25% to 50% more than you would normally drink. Drinks with caffeine or sugar do not provide the same level of hydration and should be consumed at a minimum. You should also allow time to acclimate to high temperatures. Shaded break areas with cool water should be provided and frequent job rotations out of the heat will help prevent heat illnesses. We are committed to keeping all workers safe and rely on all team members to make that happen. Preventing heat illness is key when working in hot environments. When working in the heat, you should ensure you are drinking at least 25% more water than you normally do. Avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks. If you recognize symptoms of heat illness, remember the three words water, rest, and recovery. We strongly believe a reporting culture is a safe culture. And encourage our team to report all incidents they may encounter during work hours.
