“Doing the right thing, the right way, every time, even when no-one is watching.” I recall working alone on a floating dock in 1995, manoeuvring a 28’ foot aluminum ladder with wheels at the top leaning against a boat-house I was renovating. The idea was that when the boats would go by, the boat house would rise and fall and the dock would too, but at slightly different heights and speeds and so my ladder would roll up and down the wall of the boat house while I did my work. No tie off. That same year, I was working on a flat rooftop of a building and the plumber I was helping was connecting pipes and laying them down behind him. Nobody noticed that the connected pipes had now extended past the metal flashing edge of the roof. The pipe length bounced and touched the high voltage power lines in the laneway next to the building. The ensuing voltage traveled all the way around the building’s flashing and popped every screw out and we were left with twisted, smoking metal and the need to thank our lucky stars no-one was hurt. Since then, I’ve always believed that building processes require, at minimum, that all work is executed safely. I have over 25 years experience in-field / on-site, and I’ve witnessed manager and worker behaviours toward safety work very well and very poorly. I have an additional 10 years in-office experience with managers and have seen the good & bad there too. I’ve learned that health and safety success can really only be achieved through everyone’s complete commitment and total buy-in. Overall corporate health and safety plans are always necessary but if health and safety leadership, influence and practices are not prioritized by everyone everyday, those plans can result in companies who simply have a mantra of compliance rather that an operational safety plan and total belief system that actually works and results in prevention. Site and project specific safety plans are also required but if the sites are fast & fluid because the project is fast-tracked and stacked, insufficiently staffed, behind schedule / nearing completion, the risks escalate quickly. The challenge then is how leadership can create a true culture of commitment to safety by each and every person on the team, for the team and anyone they interact with. A belief system that doesn’t just show up in the morning, rather it’s one that everyone lives by. I found this info and video on Safety Performance through Operational Excellence from the Construction Industry Institute. I found it very insightful and think it will benefit any construction leader interested in building the strongest and safest team possible. A couple of hours of your time could result in a significant positive impact for you and your team, just as it has helped ours. #teamdevelopment #constructionsafety #leadership https://lnkd.in/g9R6eMfa
