Workforce development has never been more important. As we prepare our next generation to enter the construction industry, it’s imperative that we equip them with a firm understanding of the array of opportunities and possibilities that lay before them. From state legislation to associations like AGC of Kansas, the amount of support that they’ve given to post-secondary education has been unprecedented in our state. It’s exciting to see programs like Build Up Kansas take such big strides in Kansas’ workforce development.

A move closer to home saw Al leave McConnell Dowell in 2022 to join a competitor. When a new opportunity arose less than 6 months later, he realised how much he'd missed our culture and ways of working. McConnell Dowell's values played the biggest part in Al's decision to return and in the end, working with good people and delivering highly specialised construction projects is what made that decision easy. In an industry where paths often overlap and circle back, we think leaving a door open is important for building a culture high on trust and low on ego. I specialize in Personal Insurance for Individuals, Families, and their Trusts/Estates. I also specialize in custom Insurance, HR, & Safety Solutions for their Businesses and Non-Profits.
For decades our messaging to the emerging workforce was go to High School, find a 4 year College Program, and then pursue your career. That conversation is changing, and for the right reasons, as the Trades continue to evolve and provide great opportunities for generations to come. In most cases the Construction Industry is becoming safer as technology and training continue to emerge into the workplace. Wages are competitive, work on hand for most is still extremely healthy, more benefits are being offered through employers, and pride of work creates a strong workplace culture for most. As with most Industry's everyone is fighting for the top talent available so attached are a few thoughts and ideas on how to bring the best and brightest workforce to your company!

As many of you are aware, Wisconsin is grappling with significant workforce shortages, and our talent pools continue to shrink. This challenge impacts not only our businesses but also the communities we serve. One effective solution is investing in continuing education for our employees. By equipping them with new skills, we empower them to take ownership of their work and foster a sense of autonomy. This investment doesn’t just benefit employees—it breeds innovation and productivity, driving our organizations forward. Employers who prioritize continuing education see tangible returns: improved employee engagement, reduced turnover, and a stronger, more skilled workforce. It’s a win-win! I’m excited to invite you to the Gain & Retain: Empowering the Workforce of the Future event on Friday, October 18, 2024, at UW-Green Bay.
