The Backbone of Every Structure: Columns In the world of construction, columns are more than just vertical supports – they are the backbone of every building. These essential structural elements bear the weight of the framework above and transfer it to the foundation below, ensuring stability and strength. Columns symbolize resilience and reliability. Just like in life, where we rely on certain principles or people to keep us grounded, buildings rely on columns to stand tall and firm. There are countless types of columns – circular, square, rectangular, and more, each serving a specific purpose in architecture and engineering. From the towering concrete columns in modern skyscrapers to the intricately carved pillars of ancient temples, they reflect the evolution of design and the ingenuity of humankind. So, the next time you pass by a building under construction, take a moment to appreciate the columns being erected. They aren't just holding up the structure – they're holding up the dreams of the architects, engineers, and everyone who worked on bringing that vision to life. Strong foundations and sturdy columns the perfect recipe for a structure that stands the test of time. What are your thoughts on columns? Share below

The Beam and Block slab is a cured and ready-to-install slab during all weather conditions. The rains affect workers, and this leads to construction delays as workers abandon their work to protect themselves from the rains. Construction joints are an extra cost since the client will require a bonding agent for slab continuity. Rainwater also increases the water/cement ratio which affects the workability of the concrete during the cast of a conventional slab. This leads to low strength and durability of the slab. The Beam and Block system is therefore not affected by rainy weather, unlike the conventional slab. Using the beam and block system for staircase construction is both fast and cost-effective. This method eliminates the need for extensive steelworks and formworks typically required for flight and landing. The precast beams for the flight are supported at ground floor level by a ground beam while at the landing they are supported by precast beams and steel hangers or a ring beam, creating a sloped ramp that forms the staircase’s structure. Once in place, mass concreting is applied to create the steps, significantly reducing labor, material costs, and construction time while ensuring a durable result. For ground floor slabs using the beam and block system, extensive excavation is unnecessary; only the topsoil needs to be removed, with trenches dug for the foundation walls. The precast concrete inverted T-beams are supported by the perimeter and internal load-bearing walls. These beams are specifically designed and manufactured to span particular distances, with their arrangement and lengths tailored to the span and loading requirements, as well as the type of blocks specified. This method ensures an efficient and cost-effective flooring solution. #minimalexcavation #nobackfilling #jenganaecoconcrete #jengamdogomdogo #habanahaba #stepbystep #stagebuilding #stagebuild #strongslabs #strong #durable #SustainableConstruction #ecoconcrete #beamandblock #measurements #buildkenya #buildbetter #buildgreen #concrete #concretefloors #precast #prestressed #constructionsite #housebuilding #architecture #design #building #interiordesign #renovation #engineering

The Evolution of Buildings: A Journey of Innovation The history of architecture is a fascinating narrative of human progress, mirroring the spirit of exploration. Just as Columbus ventured into uncharted territories, reshaping the world’s understanding of geography and culture, the evolution of buildings reflects humanity’s quest for efficiency, creativity, and adaptability in the face of changing needs. At Universal Steel of America, and for the last three decades, we have supported and appreciated change. As cities grew rapidly in the 20th century, traditional construction methods faced significant challenge hindered the ability to meet the demands of a burgeoning population. The need for more efficient and adaptable solutions became clear, prompting a search for innovative building methods. In this context, pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB) emerged as a modern solution to the challenges of traditional construction. By utilizing advanced engineering and manufacturing techniques, PEMB allows for quick assembly, reduced waste, and enhanced flexibility. These buildings can be customized for various uses—ranging from warehouses to schools—adapting easily to changing requirements. The modular design not only minimizes construction time but also permits future expansions with minimal disruption. Conclusion The evolution of buildings tells a story of innovation and adaptation, paralleling the explorative journeys of figures like Columbus. From ancient buildings to the modern marvels of pre-engineered metal buildings, each phase in architectural history illustrates humanity’s desire to create functional, meaningful spaces. As PEMB continues to redefine construction practices, it embodies the spirit of exploration, offering efficient and sustainable solutions for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Just as Columbus expanded our horizons, pre-engineered buildings are paving the way for a more adaptable and resilient buildings. If you have a vision, let us help you turn that dream into reality. Call one of our experts to walk you through our process, one I-beam at a time. Designers: TOMORROW is the final day to nominate your project for the 2025 Wood in Architecture Awards! Submit your nomination: woodworks.org/nominate Presented each year, the awards recognize achievements in mass timber, light-frame, and hybrid buildings in the U.S.—celebrating innovative wood design that positively impacts building occupants, their communities, and the environment. Awards will be presented at the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design in Boston, MA in June 2025. FAQs Q: Does the project need to be fully completed (not in construction) before being nominated? A: Projects must be entirely constructed (by 1/25/25) to meet the submission requirements but not necessarily occupied. Q: How many photos can be uploaded? Should we upload pictures of the project at various stages? A: We recommend ~15 images. Submit any images that will help the jury understand the story of your project and encourage the most discussion. This includes drawings, construction progress, and the finished project. If you have additional questions or need help with your nomination, contact us at info@woodworks.org. Jenga Strong na EcoConcrete! 1. The concrete used for the conventional slabs is class 25 while concrete for the precast beams is class 60, therefore it's more than twice that of the conventional. 2. The steel strength used to produce precast beams is three times stronger than that of conventional construction. 3. The precast hollow blocks are produced as per construction standards. They are designed to resist heavy loads for different slab usages. The high strength also allows the slab to be used as a platform during the construction of subsequent floors.
