✈️Celebrating 75 Years of the Bristol Brabazon: The Aircraft That Paved the Way for Concorde✈️
The 75th anniversary of the Bristol Brabazon, a pioneering aircraft that laid the groundwork for the development of Concorde, is being celebrated this September. On September 4, 1949, about 10,000 people gathered at Filton Airfield to witness its maiden flight. Dubbed the "ocean liner of the sky," the Brabazon was designed to usher in a new era of luxurious air travel. Although the project was a commercial failure, as the market shifted towards more affordable, high-density flights, it played a significant role in the history of aviation. Its development directly influenced the Bristol Aeroplane Company's future success, particularly its involvement in the design and construction of Concorde.
Aerospace Bristol is hosting talks and displays throughout September to commemorate this anniversary. Visitors can view pieces of the aircraft, including the cockpit window and tyre, while also learning about public reactions at the time. Amy Seadon, head of collections at Aerospace Bristol, expressed the museum's excitement in showcasing the importance of the Brabazon to Bristol’s aviation heritage.
Filton runway and the Brabazon Hangar, originally built for this project, became instrumental in the later development of Concorde. Despite its eventual failure, the Brabazon remains an iconic part of British aviation history.
