The Realities of Being an IITian: A Mentor's Perspective As a new JEE mentor at PW (PhysicsWallah) , I'm thrilled to guide the bright minds of Class 11th who are laser-focused on cracking JEE . Many of my students hold the perception that being an IITian means having achieved everything in life. This idea is often reinforced by their teachers, portraying IITians as almost next to God. However, the reality is quite different. When I joined Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur , I too believed in this idealised image. But within a year, I realised that while getting into IIT is a significant accomplishment, it is not the end-all-be-all. It's a milestone, not a destination. The journey at IIT brings its own set of challenges and learning experiences. Success at IIT, just like anywhere else, demands consistent effort, resilience, and adaptability. The competitive environment can be intense, and the pressure can be overwhelming at times. It's crucial to recognize that success is multifaceted and goes beyond academic achievements. To all the students aspiring to join IIT: strive for it with passion and dedication, but remember to keep a balanced perspective. Life at IIT is a new beginning, full of opportunities and lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. I'm curious to hear from fellow IITians and educators: What were your perceptions about IIT before joining, and how did they change over time? What advice would you give to students aspiring for IIT? #Education #Mentorship #JEE #IIT #RealityCheck #StudentLife

IIT life is legendary, but is it tougher than JEE prep? IIT is way different from JEE prep in some ways: → You're on your own; you've gotta manage yourself. → Everyone's a top performer, so competition is fierce. → Tons of distractions: late nights, cool activities, forgetting 10-hour study days! But it's awesome too! → You're FREE! No curfews, just make good choices. → Make amazing friends, explore new interests, and have a blast! → Professors are there to help, not just drill you. Basically, IIT is challenging, but way more fun than JEE prep. Just be ready to work hard and enjoy the ride! Can you handle the freedom and responsibility of IIT life? Tell us your thoughts! #IIT #IITian #jee #jeemain

Exactly one year ago, I was amidst preparations for the JEE Advanced examination, feeling a mix of anxiety and apprehension about my prospects. My goal was clear: securing admission to my dream college, IIT Delhi. When the results were announced in mid-June, the rush of joy I experienced upon discovering my rank, AIR 2910, was indescribable. Gratitude flooded over me for the unwavering support of my parents and teachers, who stood by me during even the darkest moments and tirelessly guided me through this pivotal phase of my life. Entering IIT Delhi's B. Tech program in Energy Science and Engineering was the beginning of a new chapter. Stepping inside the campus for orientation, I was captivated by its lush greenery and serene beauty. As the year unfolded, I encountered a rollercoaster of experiences – moments of elation, where I felt certain I had made the right choice by joining IITD, intertwined with doubts that occasionally crept in, questioning my decision. Reflecting on this past year, I am filled with gratitude for the enriching journey I have had. I forged new friendships, rediscovered my passion for sports after a three-year hiatus, learned how to live independently, and even mastered the art of last-night exam cramming. Additionally, I ventured into uncharted territories; I participated in debates for the first time in my life in DebSoc, where I learned the nuances of argumentation and persuasion. Volunteering for OCS provided me with invaluable insights into the placement process, allowing me to interact with company officials conducting interviews. Moreover, my involvement in NSS instilled in me the joy of giving back to the community. Now, brimming with enthusiasm, I eagerly anticipate the challenges, joys, and lessons that lie ahead, eager to embrace the opportunities that await me at IIT Delhi. #IITDelhi #Engineering #StudentLife #LearningJourney #Growth #Opportunities

IIT JEE is not just about intelligence; it's a mix of aptitude, preparation, and a little bit of luck. You might be a great student but still struggle to crack IIT JEE. Why? Because excelling in academics doesn’t always translate to performing under the specific exam pressure or mastering its aptitude-oriented approach. During my journey, I’ve seen exceptionally talented students, who despite being brilliant, couldn’t clear IIT JEE. A few years down the line, many of them are excelling in their careers, leading impactful lives, and proving that IIT JEE is not the only measure of success. So, what’s the takeaway? If you’re preparing for IIT JEE: 1️⃣ Keep sharpening your skills and understanding the exam's pattern. 2️⃣ But remember, this is just one stepping stone; life is full of opportunities. Success doesn’t depend on just one exam. Stay consistent, give your best shot, and trust the process—because every step builds the future you’re meant to create. No matter the outcome, keep attracting opportunities and making the most of them. One opportunity is all it takes to change everything. #IITJEE #Motivation #StudentLife #KeepGoing

I failed to qualify for IIT-JEE by lots of marks ☹️ because I didn’t prepare for it. . . . Getting into IIT was like everyone's my dream too. Not just for me, but this dream shatters for millions every year.📈 What I lost by not getting a IIT ?? Now I can say nothing as such but few things which I need to highlight is: I didn’t explore much on sports ⚽️ I didn’t get good campus I didn’t get a highly qualified teacher I didn’t get a good food. I didn’t get a good placement in top companies. But this all you can achieve without IIT degree also. Now a days people’s selling the dreams of IIT and crore of placement that is totally misguiding students and parents. Hope you will understand and don’t be influenced by today worlds. Peoples are telling you lie 99% of times. Be Aware. Follow for more such content: https://lnkd.in/gtA7C4BH

There's a stereotype about IITians keep mentioning their IIT background in conversation. But before we dissect why this might happen, let's look at the flip side: why could it actually be a good thing? → Cracking the IIT-JEE is notoriously tough. Mentioning IIT can be a way for students to acknowledge the hard work and dedication it took to get there. → IITs are premier institutions, and graduating from one signifies strong academic ability. It can open doors to opportunities and build trust. → IIT alumni have a strong network. Mentioning IIT can be a way to connect with others who share a similar experience. → Getting into an IIT is a significant achievement. Talking about it can be a natural confidence booster. But of course, there's a difference between pride and arrogance. Ideally, mentioning IIT should be a part of introducing yourself, not the entirety of your personality. Ultimately, being an IITian is a great accomplishment. But remember, your value comes from your experiences, skills, and how you treat others. #IIT #IITian #stories

Above-Average Marks but Below-Average Grade: Welcome to IIT! The exam season might be over, but the real challenge begins now – D-Day, the results. I am currently pursuing MTech in CSE at IIT Ropar, and I recently received my grades for the first semester. Despite scoring 80.75 out of 100 in CS542, where the highest score was 91.375, my grade turned out to be a 7 (B-). Interestingly, even scoring above 90 doesn’t guarantee a 10 or even 9 grade – you might still end up with a ‘B’. Yes, this is IIT for you! The competition is intense, not only to get through the gates of IIT but also once you are inside. It’s a continuous grind. This experience has been an eye-opener for me, showing just how driven students are when it comes to scoring marks. Here’s what I’ve learned: there’s no shortcut to success at IIT. Late-night cramming won’t get you far. Consistency is key – working diligently on assignments, quizzes, term projects, midterms, and end-term exams throughout the semester is the only way to stay ahead. And yet, sometimes, even that might not feel enough for a great grade. So, my advice? Keep pushing your limits. Work hard, stay dedicated, and trust the process – who knows, your efforts might pay off someday! Keep learning, keep growing, and enjoy the journey. This is Priyanshu Shukla, signing off. We all thought the ultimate goal of JEE was to secure a seat in IIT—but we couldn’t have been more wrong. Almost all of us spent our last 2 years of school life preparing for JEE, alongside some folks like me who took 3 years to clear JEE, but most of us failed to achieve the success associated with it, I'm not talking about a seat in a top tier IIT, but The mindset of hard work and pushing the limits! 3.5 years post JEE, I have now realized what that phase was all about and why people who excelled in that phase tend to better in life. Moving beyond numbers and equations, it tried to teach us 👉 Committing to an Objective 👉 Working and Fighting with a Problem Statement 👉 Managing and Juggling Priorities I failed to understand and implicate them in my life, even after almost completing college, but I did retain a small fraction of it, Managing Expectations Post my JEE failure in 2020, I have started to set my expectations as per my effort rather than the facilities or past records, and yes I was in Delulu that I am good in Physics, and only that will help me achieve a decent enough rank. Well, those days are gone. Now, I look forward to what I have got in my luck, Carrer Wise. What did you retain from your JEE phase? #JEE #IIT #JEEphase #Mindset

Getting into IIT doesn’t really matter if you can’t make the best of it. When you come from a small town with limited resources, the stakes are higher. You aren’t just working for yourself—you’re working for a generational shift. That mindset stayed with me throughout my time at IIT Bombay. Looking back, I can hardly believe what my final year there looked like. I took on more responsibilities than I ever imagined, but I knew this was my moment to push my limits. In an year alone, I: ↳Represented both MSc batches as an elected Master’s Representative. ↳ Served as the Academic Representative in the Post Graduate Academic Council (PGAC, IITB). ↳ Played a key role in organizing Genvision, the annual biotech festival of IITB. ↳ Organised Department Reunion Convocation for the batch graduating during COVID lockdown. ↳ Organised one more Department Convocation for our immediate seniors in the same year. ↳ Participated in cricket tournaments, despite an overwhelming academic commitments. ↳ Coordinated Ramadan Sehri for the fasting students at IITB and engaged in other cultural events. ↳ Successfully built and led Alig Mentors, during my time at IITB. ↳ Stayed at IITB during winter and summer break to give myself more time to explore research. ↳ Immersed myself in technical and cultural programs wherever it happened in the campus. All this while maintaining a 9.23 CPI. Because I knew it matters too barring few instances. But of course, all of this came at a cost. Weekends were tightly packed, and I had many sleepless nights to manage my academics alongwith everything I did. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. The experiences and growth far outweighed any temporary discomfort or sacrifice. Did I want more time at IIT? Yes, without a doubt. The year flew by, leaving me wishing for more—more opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to that incredible community. Here’s what I walked away with: ↳ Invaluable exposure and experiences. ↳ A network of peers, mentors, and industry professionals. ↳ Time management and prioritization skills that comes so handy. ↳ Better self-awareness and an understanding of my potential to perform more than I could imagine. ↳ The satisfaction of making a positive impact through leadership roles within the academic community. The lessons and growth from that time have stayed with me. I'm don't regret the sacrifices and the missed weekend, as they laid the foundation for who I am today. What about you? Can you share an experience where pushing through discomfort led to your biggest growth? I’d love to hear your story. Image: A moment from the Farewell Program. (I'd to repeat a dialogue).
