Sometimes the boost/advice/pep talk/information you need is just under your nose. But, I firmly believe that we notice it at the precise time that we need it as long as we keep an open mind and heart. I try to keep this in mind professionally, but I recently had a personal example of this playing out in my life. ___ A couple of years ago, a friend of mine gave me "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows" as a gift. It went into my TBR pile and I didn't think much of it. I finally picked it up at the beginning of this month and finished it yesterday. It is the most profound book I've ever read. If you know me, you know that I read a lot, including a ton of philosophy books, so this is a bold statement. The way that the author gives our feelings, even the most obscure, power by creating words for them is truly life-changing. Will I remember most of the words in the book? Probably not. But will I keep with me the feeling of being seen? That I am not alone in the way I see the world around me? You bet. What a beautiful reminder that words are important and that the power words have is only the power we give them. Even if you don't pick up the book, you can check out the website. It's outdated but contains an archive of a ton of the words you'd see in the book. I highly recommend that take a few minutes today to read a few of the definitions. https://lnkd.in/gWAmCvfU #reading

3 Pieces of Wisdom about assumptions and truths 1. In the absence of definite answers, assumptions become our truths. 2. In an increasingly uncivilized world, civility looks like intelligence to some and weakness to others. 3. The outsider looking in is always in on the joke. Mara van der Lugt's Begetting is an investigation of what it means to have children—morally, philosophically and emotionally. “Do you want to have children?” is a question we routinely ask each other. But what does it mean to create a child? Is this decision always justified? Does anyone really have the moral right to create another person? In Begetting, Mara van der Lugt attempts to fill in the moral background of procreation. Drawing on both philosophy and popular culture, van der Lugt does not provide a definitive answer on the morality of having a child; instead, she helps us find the right questions to ask. This is How I Like to Live! Titles fascinate me. Those that adorn the covers of books, I sail through their pages, lead me towards topics that all share in discussing issues related to man, the mind, behavior, society, and all of them discuss the truth that is the subject, the action, and the emotion. The basis of all these truths is the mind, as it is the compass through which and on the basis of which a person expresses his truth and his psychological quality.
