That's three times higher than the general population. In addition to prolonged waiting lists for mental health support, the services needed by women are simply unavailable in many areas. Our frontline staff tell us those that do exist are regularly overwhelmed with referrals, often to the extent that they have to close their waiting lists, leaving women with no specialist mental health support at all. Without swift and robust action, we face a serious crisis with women continuing to suffer and, ultimately, die by suicide. Women’s mental health must become an urgent priority across local and national government. As part of this, specialist wraparound support needs to be provided for all women and girls in their communities. There is (rightly) a lot of talk and posts about mental health this month. It is Mental Health Awareness month. There is much talk of individual care. Self care. But what of communal care? Expecting folks, especially survivors, to invest in their mental and physical health individually, without systemic support, is akin to gaslighting folks into believing they’re not doing enough, not smart enough, not invested enough in themselves. Mental health is - housing security - food security - legal security - social security - economic security Mental health is -affordable healthcare -universal childcare -maternal and reproductive healthcare Mental health is individual care wrapped in loving communal care, held up by just and equitable economic, political and social frameworks. Access to quality mental health services is essential for the overall well-being of individuals, regardless of their age or geographical location. However, rural areas in Arizona often face significant challenges in accessing adequate mental healthcare. Mental health is more than a topic is essential for all human beings. Since the moment we are born to the end of our days. The experiences we have in our early stages when we are infants and toddlers will determine many factors later on. When we are born we are seeds that need to be watered and care for. If we do not receive this, it will be very challenging building resilience, managing our emotions/feeling and coping with stressful situations. An infant is the future tree that needs so much care. Let’s ensure we are doing our best to ensure the healthcare model includes embracing families and their children by providing access to community services as we break the healthcare disparities.
