Stable power swings allow machines to return to #synchronous speed, while unstable power swings cause machines to lose synchronism with the system. The impedance seen by a relay during a power swing changes based on the ratio of voltages and can move along a trajectory in the impedance plane. Impedance relays can be affected by power swings, as the impedance may enter the relay’s characteristic region, causing it to trip. Testing power swing elements in protective relays is crucial to ensure their proper functioning and reliability in detecting and responding to power swings. Understanding the behavior of power swings and their impact on relays can help in designing effective protection schemes for power systems.
