AARP released their latest Dignity 2024 survey, which increases our understanding of the lived experience of LGBTQ+ adults age 45-plus in the areas of health care access, caregiving, isolation, and relationships. It was found that four out of five older LGBTQ+ adults, or ~78%, are concerned about having enough social support as they get older. Women and Black respondents, along with those who have a disability, were more likely to say they are “extremely” or “very” concerned about a lack of social support in the future. The survey also found that half of #LGBTQ+ older adults already feel socially isolated at times, which can have a profound impact on a person’s mental and physical health, research shows. The feelings are highest among transgender and nonbinary adults, with 63 percent reporting they often or sometimes feel isolated from others. #WeRefusetoBeInvisible #LGBTQAging Check out additional survey findings here: https://loom.ly/l5H7cMc

From AARP: "A sizable number of LGBTQ+ respondents are currently providing or have provided caregiving in the past. Nearly six in ten (58%) respondents are currently or have previously provided care for a loved one. While caregiving brings a great sense of joy to many, several challenges exist for all caregivers; most often, feeling stressed emotionally (78%). LGBTQ+ respondents who are caregivers also have difficulty doing the things they need to do to take care of themselves such as getting enough rest (61%), exercising (60%), maintaining a healthy diet (50%), or going to see their own doctors (28%). Some LGBTQ+ caregivers also feel obligated to care for someone who is not accepting of their identity (14%)." If you are a caregiver for someone with intellectual or developmental disabilities, the St. Louis Arc is committed to providing empathetic, focused family support. https://lnkd.in/d3H8RczM

Thursday Tea: Addressing LGBTQ+ Healthcare Disparities As an intersectional individual who is queer, I'm deeply concerned about the lack of medical access that impacting the LGBTQ+ community. The intersection of sexual orientation, gender identity, and other identities often leads to compounded discrimination and barriers to healthcare. LGBTQ+ Health Insurance Disparities: Statistics reveal that LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to be uninsured or underinsured compared to their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts. Studies show that LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk of postponing or forgoing necessary medical care due to cost concerns and lack of inclusive healthcare policies. The Impact: These disparities have a significant impact on the physical and mental well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, leading to increased health risks and poorer health outcomes. The Call for Inclusive Policies: It's imperative for healthcare policies to be inclusive and equitable, ensuring that LGBTQ+ individuals have access to affirming and competent care without facing financial or discriminatory hurdles. I'm proud of the work that we have been doing at Conscious By Us, LLC driving awareness and advocating for inclusive healthcare and equity for all. Let's continue the conversation on creating a healthcare environment that prioritizes inclusivity and equity for all. Together, we can push for change and make a difference. #ThursdayTea #LGBTQHealth #HealthEquity #ConsciousByUs #InclusiveHealthcare

Compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers, members of the LGBTQ+ population are more likely to be primary caregivers. Despite this, LGBTQ+ caregivers face unique barriers when navigating health and human services systems, including high rates of discrimination in health care settings. Combined with higher rates of social isolation and depression among LGBTQ+ caregivers, these challenges can result in worse health outcomes for both caregivers and care recipients. In recognition of National Family Caregivers Month, this new fact sheet, developed by the Center for Health Care Strategies with support from the The John A. Hartford Foundation, documents some of the unique challenges LGBTQ+ caregivers face, as well as a number of policy solutions that can better support caregivers and their biological and chosen families. The fact sheet highlights opportunities to improve the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ caregivers by recognizing chosen relationships, implementing provider training, expanding data collection, and understanding the intersection of diverse identities. https://bit.ly/3SGMtze Liz Gipson, Courtney Shahan Roman, Nida Joseph, Jason Flatt, PhD, MPH
