Celebrating School Governors' Awareness Day - The Power of Volunteering
As we mark School Governors' Awareness Day today, the 29th of February 2024, I am reminded of volunteer school governors' profound impact on our education system. Volunteering as a school governor has been an incredibly rewarding journey for me, and here are two reasons why I chose this path:
1. Making a Real Difference: Being a school governor allows me to contribute meaningfully to the educational journey of young minds. It's about ensuring our schools excel academically and providing a nurturing environment for all-round development.
2. Community Engagement: This role has allowed me to engage with our community more deeply, understanding its diverse needs and aspirations. It's about building bridges between schools and their communities, fostering a collaborative environment that enriches education for everyone.
I encourage professionals from all backgrounds to consider school and trust governance. It's a chance to give back, share your expertise, and shape our society's future. Let's spread the word and inspire more individuals to join this noble cause.

In the realm of institutional processes, ample evidence indicates that students of color often encounter substantial isolation and challenges in adapting, as educational institutions have only recently evolved into more inclusive environments for Black students and other individuals of color. Institutional racism, microaggressive behaviors, and other forms of active oppression continue to take place within these spaces. We support and want to call attention to the efforts being made to establish dedicated spaces for communities of color on the UW campus, offering resources and educational support to counteract the ongoing adversities faced by our students.
Listed below, the UW has several offices and student facing organizations accessible both on campus and remotely, providing additional support for students of color as they navigate these injustices and challenges within and beyond the institutional framework at UW.

While alarming statistics on chronic absenteeism in schools are easy to find, impactful interventions are rare. That’s where Newark’s youth come in. Through Newark Opportunity Youth Network, they've pioneered a youth-led conversation campaign that’s changing the game in educational reform.
By engaging their peers in over 30 recorded small-group conversations around their lived experiences, these young leaders have built a model for meaningful educational change led by youth and powered by youth voices.

THE POWER OF A SCHOOL
AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
Part 1: Service and Volunteerism
It’s evident that for students to thrive both academically and personally, a holistic approach to education is essential. This means schools and communities must work together, creating symbiotic relationships that benefit everyone involved. One of the most impactful ways this partnership can manifest is through community service and volunteerism.
- Why Schools and Communities Need Each Other -
When schools operate in isolation, they often miss out on the rich resources and opportunities that their communities can offer. Conversely, communities that don't engage with their local schools lose out on the fresh perspectives and youthful energy that students bring.
Here’s one reason a collaborative approach is crucial:
Community involvement provides students with real-world experiences that textbooks cannot offer.
For instance, how are our children supposed to know that the pizza boxes in the pizza establishment they often visit don’t fold themselves; someone has to fold them?
Through the Resilient Futures Initiative, we can ensure that students are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the skills and experiences necessary to make a positive impact on the world. Let's work together to make this vision a reality.

The critical partnership between parents and schools in a child's development highlights several important points:
1. **Foundational Role of Parents**: Parents are the primary influencers of a child's early values and behavior. The family environment sets the initial framework for a child's understanding of the world, their ethics, and their social skills.
2. **Schools as Key Developmental Partners**: Schools complement the foundational work of parents by providing structured education, socialization opportunities, and exposure to diverse perspectives. Teachers and school staff play significant roles in guiding academic and personal growth.
3. **Importance of Collaboration**: Effective communication and collaboration between parents and schools can enhance the child's learning experience. When both parties work together, they can address any issues more efficiently and support the child's overall well-being.
4. **Holistic Development**: A child benefits most when both their home and school environments are aligned in their educational and developmental goals. This alignment ensures a consistent approach to nurturing the child's intellectual, emotional, and social development.
5. **Community Support**: The concept of raising a child as a team effort underscores the value of community involvement. It takes a collective effort to provide children with the best opportunities for success and well-being.
By embracing this partnership, parents and schools can create a robust support system that fosters the growth of well-rounded, capable, and resilient individuals.

Anyone who knows me well knows how important my role as a Trustee and Vice-Chair is to me. I have been involved in school governance for 15 years and have been a Trustee in a Multi Academy Trust for three years and I can honestly say that it some of the most meaningful work that I have ever done.
Did you know that school governors and trustees make up one of the biggest volunteer workforces in the UK? Over a quarter of a million people are making a difference in their communities and improving the lives of children and young people by giving their time as a governor or trustee.
Being involved in school governance is one of the most rewarding ways in which I have been able to give something back to society and play a part in my local community at the same time as developing my professional skills and gaining valuable experience in strategic leadership.
You don’t have to be an expert in education or a parent or have any special skills to become a governor. What you do need is enthusiasm for improving outcomes for children, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse and a willingness to learn and get involved
If you are looking for a meaningful and impactful volunteer role, I would wholeheartedly recommend becoming a school governor or trustee so you can help to improve opportunities for children and young people in your community.
