At the READS Lab at Harvard University’s inaugural summer institute, districts dove deep into the research and practice of the Model of Reading Engagement (MORE), an elementary science and social studies program that builds schemas and improves academic achievement. Some key lessons from the Institute: 🏡 Schemas help students find a home for their knowledge. 🧗♂️Students need strong supports to navigate complex literary structures. 📓 Early literacy isn’t built in ELA classes alone. 💡 Explore these three lessons: https://lnkd.in/eecitvZx

As part of an AALL Grant to investigate the academic literacy needs of international higher degree by research (HDR) students on a pathway program, our research team presented some preliminary findings from a scoping review at the ECUlture Conference held at Edith Cowan University last month. The studies we analysed suggest that academic literacy needs include not only acculturation to the academic environment of the university, but also the development of agency and identity as a HDR student and a sense of belonging to the wider research community. Thanks to my team members Jo McFarlane, Michael Stein, Sharon Matthews, Tina Yan and Dr Lesley Andrew for their contributions and to the audience for their insightful questions.
