Witness the unsung heroes from diverse segments across Langkawi, as they dedicate themselves to supporting youth, the underprivileged, wildlife, and our environment. In this first film of the four-part series, you will see The Datai Pledge band together with local champions, empowering artisans, revitalizing beaches alongside fishing communities, assisting farmers in producing organic produce, and more. Working across the pillars under The Datai Pledge, partner NGOs and social enterprises such as The Kansha Life Project (a social enterprise that seeks to be a sustainable hotspot combining entrepreneurship, spirituality, and sustainability), Green Growth Asia Foundation (an NGO whose aim it is to respond to sustainability challenges in Asia through ‘green growth’ programmes), and MareCet (the only NGO in Malaysia dedicated to marine mammal conservation), all come together with members of the community and our team, to improve the well-being of the environment, wildlife and community of Langkawi, ensuring that we preserve its treasures for future generations to cherish. In the village of Menarbu, West Papua, Indonesia, the ocean is critical to survival. But overfishing and competition for resources put these waters under threat. To turn things around, the community turned to ancestral wisdom – embracing tradition passed down through generations. Helping to jump-start this initiative, Yayasan WWF Indonesia worked together with local people to protect their waters. Now, communities are continuing to take it forward. In the past six years, Riau has witnessed the devastation of 164,000 hectares due to forest fires, releasing a staggering 136 million tons of CO2e. Amidst this, Siak Regency stands out as a beacon of hope. Through Green Siak initiative, Siak tackled the flames head-on, reducing fire-affected areas significantly. Siak's commitment is unwavering. Despite challenges, a remarkable decline in fires is progressing, a testament to the dedication and sustainability. Head of Siak Regional Development Planning Agency, Leonardus Budhi Yuwono, affirms the tangible impact: "What we feel the most is the reduction in the rate of fires." In collaboration with NGOs and corporations, including Wilmar International and Greenpeace Indonesia, Siak pioneering change. Leaving Uganda for the Netherlands to embark on this year's work, I ponder over the change we aim to contribute to this year of impact for the Voices for Just Climate Action.(VCA) As the lead for inclusive conservation at Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL), and global manager of the VCA I had focused on building agency within the 7 WWF offices implementing the program. Now, I am confident that we have passed stage three of the adoption ladder and we set for impact. The stages of adoption are: 1.Awareness ( Most of my colleague had a steep learning curve to learn how to put people and justice first to conservation) 2.Attitude change (they now ask the right questions about the position of people in nature) 3.Taking Action (I see reflections in budgets and plans). 4. Advocating for change ( Many are leading change in their offices and shaping new programs I am confident that they are set to take ambitious #climatejustice actions and to lead the advocacy for impactful and just inclusive conservation in Brazil, Zambia, Bolivia, Paraguay, Indonesia, Tunisia, Kenya and Netherlands. I feel very privileged and honoured to lead this internal movement and together with our partners we promise a happy and impactful 2024!
