International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has launched a tool to put a value on non-economic losses of climate change. Climate change has numerous and cascading impacts which go beyond the loss of biodiversity and livelihoods, especially in vulnerable communities in the global South. Non-economic losses include cultural erosion, loss of heritage and mental health issues. The Comprehensive Climate Impact Quantification toolkit has been developed to put monetary value on these impacts, which are usually ignored. https://loom.ly/-XY4y4E OCEAN is interested in funding holistic and innovative solutions which consider the multitude of impacts faced by coastal communities as a result of climate change 🌊

Health is a top reason climate change matters to all of us. Caribbean countries are especially vulnerable to climate change-related damage to livelihoods, health systems and infrastructure. We are increasingly susceptible to health impacts such as heat-related illness, non-communicable diseases, mosquito-borne diseases and mental ill-health. I'm proud that my company, Blue Sky Development Consulting, were lead consultants in developing the Public, Private, People’s and Planetary Agenda as part of the Research for Action on Climate Change and Health in the Caribbean project. The agenda is a resource for the movement to forge resilience against the impact of climate change on health. It synthesises Caribbean evidence on health impacts and exposures, adaptation and mitigation action, resources and engagement and was based on a consultative process involving hundreds of experts and advocates. Thanks to co-authors from EarthMedic/ EarthNurse, Yale University Center on Climate Change and Health, the University of the West Indies, Emory Rollins School of Public Health and the Pan American Health Organization for this great opportunity and collaboration. https://lnkd.in/dFrZ2x8Z

This new report tracks 42 indicators highlighting the negative impacts of climate change on human health, the delayed climate action of European countries, and the missed opportunities to protect or improve health with health-responsive climate action. ✍ The European Environment Agency recently published the new report on 'Urban adaptation in Europe'. With most people in Europe living in urban areas, cities play a key role in protecting citizens and improving resilience to the increasing impacts of the climate crisis. 🐏 The report takes stock of urban climate adaptation in Europe and highlights which measures cities are already taking in response to increasing climate risks. The city of Ostend (Stad Oostende, Belgium) actively works to implement climate adaptation actions and were glad to provide a successful practice for the chapter 'Why is urban agriculture important for urban adaptation' in this report: our urban agriculture park The Gardens of Stene (page 114). Let us listen to the voices of our children in this video; the clock is ticking and collectively, we need to find ways to future-proof their lives. Across the region, our programmes seek to address climate change in 5 practical ways: 1. Restore the natural environment through reforestation and provide communities a sturdy shield against floods and coastal erosion. 2. Increase resilience to climate change with climate-smart livelihoods and anticipatory actions. 3. Promote eco-friendly farming to build sustainable livelihoods that minimises impact on the environment. 4. Empower future generations and equip children to speak on climate issues which affect their lives. 5. Advocate for climate actions to decision makers and global leaders to increase finances, replicate what has been proven effective, and accelerate progress towards sustainable development. Within this process, it has been decided to prepare a special report on 'Climate Change and Cities' in response to the growing interest in the impacts of climate change on cities and the challenges and opportunities for city-specific mitigation and adaptation. As part of strengthening Japan's contribution to the IPCC 7th Assessment Cycle, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) launched a collaborative research project on urban transformation with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in September 2023, with the aim of providing key findings for the Special Report on 'Climate Change and Cities'. This symposium aims to discuss how Japan can contribute to the IPCC 7th assessment cycle, including the launch of the report produced by this collaborative project.

Based on 76 interviews with professionals involved in climate responses in South Florida, the authors of this article evaluated perceptions of adaptation goals, the potential role of climate mobilities in pathways supporting those goals, and associated constraints and enablers. The interviewees perceive climate mobilities as "causing distributional inequities and financial and sociocultural disruptions," noting the role of climate change in migration and gentrification. Many practitioners in the region feel prepared for their own roles related to climate mobilities, but "they judge the region as a whole as being unprepared to support the retreat they see as inevitable, with a need for a more ambitious long-term transition plan." #climateadaptation #climatemigration #climateaction #resilience #Florida #AdaptationLeader Katharine Mach, A.R.
