You wouldn’t keep digging up a seed to check if it has sprouted. (But we’re still using outdated interview methods…) System design interviews often feel disconnected from real-world experience. When candidates excel in areas they’ve never worked in, it raises a red flag: Memorization or genuine expertise? Interviewers should focus on a candidate’s real experience and domain-specific skills. Instead of testing memory, ask questions about their past work—get deeper insights into their problem-solving and creativity. Expecting candidates to master unfamiliar areas? That only leads to superficial evaluations. Here’s what matters long-term: 🔑 A learning mindset 🔑 Practical application In many cases, interviewers ask system design questions expecting a specific answer. But system design doesn’t fit in a textbook. One problem, multiple solutions. The trade-offs are key. If the interviewer fails to set expectations and looks for a rigid answer—it’s a waste of time for both. It’s time to rethink our approach: Don’t stump candidates. Gauge their problem-solving in their area of expertise.

They provided precise control over rendered components. But they fell short when testing complex UI elements like dropdowns. Integration testing tools like Cypress or Playwright offered better browser control. Yet, they required extensive setup and were slow for user-interaction dependent components. Testing scenarios with multiple states, like dark mode, were cumbersome. Waiting for countdown timers increased execution time significantly. E2E component testing tools tried to bridge the gap. But they struggled with complex applications using OAuth or intricate setups. API interactions during tests required custom configurations. This made the testing process more complicated. Traditional methods lacked sufficient visibility into issues like z-index conflicts. Debugging became a complex task. 3 key challenges of traditional UI testing: 1. Trade-offs Between Testing Methods - Unit testing tools limit interaction with actual UI elements. - Integration testing tools need extensive setup and are slow. - E2E tools face architectural challenges with complex applications. 2. Complexity in Testing Scenarios - Multiple states and conditional rendering increase execution time. - Scenarios like countdown timers add to the complexity. 3. Difficulty in API Interactions and Debugging - Custom configurations are needed for alternative API endpoints. - Lack of visibility into UI issues makes debugging hard.
