The rollback of freebies by Himachal Pradesh government in the wake of severe financial crisis should become a case study of the possible hazards of politically motivated public welfare policies without any financial forecasting. If one remembers, Himachal Pradesh was one of the first states to go back to the Old Pension Scheme as well in spite of repeated flags raised by no less than the RBI governer himself, among others. Piling on the debt burden of a state to offer unsustainable welfare should be discouraged at the highest level especially when we as a nation are trying to reduce the fiscal deficit and becoming more self reliant. The public coffers don’t just fill by themselves and a lot of aspiring political leaders fail to understand this. Governance should be as much about generation of revenues as it is about equitable distribution of resources.

This beautiful picture and verses should be included in every introductory course on economics, not to mention textbooks on economic history. Prices in the "Ruler of Waves" and "The Workshop of the World" were stable for decades! One could even tattoo it as an ever-relevant reference. The same is more or less true for all other taxpayer democracies of the 19th century. The main reason behind this price stability was not even the gold standard, but rather the balanced government budgets that were not burdened by "generous" welfare spending (at the taxpayers' expense for bureaucrats and "tax-consumers"' benefit - see https://lnkd.in/gEBjY9R) and the massive machinery of the welfare state.

Presenting our Market Pulse for July 2024, which tracks the status of reforms and expectations from the upcoming Budget. We expect the government to continue its focus on capex in infrastructure, while political necessities will likely lead to increased spending on social welfare schemes. All this will occur while attempting to reduce the fiscal deficit as a percentage of GDP. It will be a tightrope walk for sure.

Pros of UBI...PART 2 of 3 Some of the pros of UBI are straightforward—for example, with consistent and reliable payments from the program, people could choose to spend less time working or pursue jobs they enjoy or those that offer more competitive wages. Another pro—with this safety net, people would also be better able to take time off of work to care for a family member, should the need arise. Proponents of UBI say that governments may spend less to administer UBI in comparison to traditional welfare plans. And UBI could help in ending the cycle of poverty that some people on welfare find themselves trapped in. Another benefit? UBI payments have the potential to help stabilize the economy during a recession.

Budget day: Can the government juggle growth & public welfare? The Indian Budget is here, and with it comes the annual tightrope walk for the BJP government. Balancing fiscal prudence with populism is no easy feat, especially amidst an uneven economic recovery. Key questions on everyone's mind: Infrastructure push: Will the budget prioritize infrastructure spending to boost job creation and growth? ️ Social safety net: With rising inflation, will the government strengthen welfare programs to protect vulnerable sections? ️ Taxation tweaks: Can the government offer tax relief to spur consumer spending and investment without blowing the deficit? The BJP's approach will have a ripple effect across the economy. A pro-growth budget could reignite investor confidence, but neglecting social welfare could lead to unrest. Let's see how the Finance Minister threads the needle! #Budget2024 #IndianEconomy #BJPGovernment #EconomyAndPolitics
