These two days in Planica (SLO) with the promising young Nordic skiers were wonderful. In January, we started a path that aims to #involve and #listen more and more the young athletes on sustainability issues. It is a project to make #athletes truly protagonists of #change. The role of FIS in this project is to #inspire and #facilitate their ideas, treating all their ideas with respect, even the strangest - which sometimes is also the winning one. It was nice to see how even those initially less tempted found the #inspiration to participate by making their own contribution. I think this drive is due to the #possibility of putting an #idea into action, giving it shape, making it #tangible. A big #thanks to all the people involved! Between the recent announcement of a new identity for the New Zealand SailGP Team to Black Foils and excitement building for the #NewZealandSGP next weekend, we wanted to take a look at the team's initiative for the Accelerating Inclusion key focus area for the Impact League this #ImpactThursday. New Zealand’s project mission is to dismantle social, cultural, economic, and participation barriers. How? By creating a kit set to make traditional sailing waka (canoes) accessible within sailing clubs across New Zealand. This initiative aims to extend beyond the waves, reaching schools and various community groups. The Kiwis are not only pushing boundaries in sailing but fostering inclusivity and accelerating change in opportunity, development and representation in the sport. On the way to his second Tour de France victory last year, Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard was facing tough questions regarding his pace before he even arrived in Paris. How was he going so fast? How was it possible to be over seven minutes ahead of a cyclist of Tadej Pogačar's caliber? Some reporters even explicitly asked: "Are you cheating?". In 2023, Vingegaard completed the grueling 3-week, 3,401 kilometer competition at an average speed of 41.4 km/h (25.574 mph). Given cycling's deservedly bad reputation, it is perhaps understandable that exceptional performances like that still raise suspicions. As Statista's Felix Richter shows in the chart below, the Tour de France has not slowed down since the doping-infested years of the early 2000s. Whether that's due to super-fast carbon bikes, favorable routing or the use of performance-enhancing substances is a question the sport is not yet fully able to answer.

Don’t stop moving, no matter what happens! You’re only in competition with your yesterday’s self, no one else. My second marathon completed and despite the pain, the want to take a break, I powered through and feel all the better for it. Barcelona marathon was fantastic - a great city to run in, well organised, a great atmosphere, and ideal weather. Many people would ask ‘why put yourself through such challenges, such discomfort, and such an extreme?’ - because I want to push myself, learn more, and grow as a person. Keeping on moving doesn’t mean you have to always be going at 100mph, you can slow down and take stock at times when needed, and at other times you can speed-up and race. Despite there being nearly 20,000 runners, I was only competing against myself and my previous marathon PB, I was not focused on what times others completed the race in. I was super pleased to beat my PB from Lisbon, finishing the marathon in 3h 50min. Whilst this was a personal achievement, there was a shared sense of accomplishment from everyone in the event. One of the effects of the fact that golf has been an Olympic sport again since 2016 is that it is being compared with other disciplines - also when it comes to sustainability. This is why The Sport Ecology Groups latest report on #sustainability is important. The International Golf Federation, which acts as the international representative of golf but, in fact, mainly organizes the Olympic golf competition in the professional sector, was also assessed. What conclusions can be drawn from the assessment in the report? - The relatively brief assessment, which is positive, does justice to the importance of the IGF. It makes it clear that this assessment does not apply to the various professional tours and influential players like the United States Golf Association (USGA), The R&A, the PGAs and Augusta National Golf Club. It also clarifies that there is currently no unified strategy from a recognized world federation, as is the case with World Athletics. - In a statement on the report, the Sport Ecology Group, led by scientist Madeleine Orr, also makes it clear how the "fossil sponsorship" factor is assessed. "The Sport Ecology Group does not feel comfortable celebrating federations as leaders in the sport sustainability space, if they receive funding from fossil fuel interests." Various professional tours, major golf tournaments, top golfers and female golfers can feel addressed here. Golf offers a target here. - The IGF's signing of the Sports for Nature resolution in connection with the 2024 Olympic Games is viewed positively. Swiss Golf also signed the resolution in Paris; otherwise, England Golf and Fédération française de golf have done so to date. - All in all, the conclusion is as follows: the International Golf Federation does not stand out negatively in the report - but not positively either. Golf is not seen as one of the pioneers regarding sustainability. In view of the numerous sustainability initiatives and projects by individuals, golf clubs and associations, a different external image should be possible. To become the "Most Improved Federation" at the 2028 Olympic Games could be one. This year, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) won this award - for its water project.  As in #sports, you also need #goals for sustainability. That would be one. 22 May was a memorable day for associations. Brussels hosted the very first European Association Summit & Awards, organised by ESAE - European Society of Association Executives. VISITFLANDERS Convention Bureau has been the proud partner of this organisation "of association professionals for association professionals" since 2018. Those association professionals were present in large numbers to elevate the profession and share knowledge. Among the 180 attendees: our Association Experts Tuya Beyers, Gemmeke De Jongh (she/her) and Milo Vergucht. Evelyne Bardyn had the most fun job on this beautiful evening: making people happy 🤗 Our Head of Convention Bureau handed out the Impact Award, rewarding the project that focuses on the overarching vision and values of an association than on its day-to-day operations. 🏆 The deserved winner was Cycling Industries Europe, with a campaign which successfully influenced the EU Commission to adopt an overarching strategy on cycling. By the way: cycling — isn't that one of the domains in which Flanders is a world leader? That's right: you can't find a better location for your conference than the region where the average family owns 3 bicycles 🚲🚲🚲 #associations #conferences #cycling #EAS24
