For the past three weeks, I've been working with a smart, inspiring, and quintessential team of Fellows for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Residency Fellowship Programme for 2024. This year's theme, which is "Knowledge and Power: Confronting Global Imbalances in Our Knowledge Systems," is designed to reflect on the following questions: The key questions are: 1. How can we counter inequalities in access to knowledge and in the visibility of different forms of knowledge? 2. What resources are required to diversify access to the existing system? 3. What possible ways are there of re-establishing traditional knowledge systems that have been destroyed by colonialism? 4. How can researchers and political actors from the Global North be sensitised to persisting colonial structures as well as to the value of existing local and indigenous knowledge? Our targeted outputs are not just academic in nature, but reflecting our diverse backgrounds, we're also exploring other exciting formats to reach even non-academic audiences. Yesterday, one of us led us in a Pub Quizz where regular bar patrons, alongside the Fellow participated in an exciting quizz which content focused on things that would ordinarily be discussed in a classroom or conference setting. Our key focus was highlighting evils of colonialism and its subsisting aftermath. The bar patrons were excited to learn and discuss such critical issues; they equally felt empowered with the knowledge, and we felt fulfilled. What other ways do you think could be exciting in engaging with the general public over matters like knowledge production and dissemination? In what ways have imbalances in our knowledge systems between the Global North and Global South affected you? From Bihar (or Kerala) to Boston, the Fulbright ticket gifted more than a decade back was well worth it. Maybe you might be lucky, too. ✳ Most importantly, for a grassroots (at that time) social impact professional, I would think twice before buying a domestic air ticket. So, the $$ was beyond a dream. Then, add a set of multicultural friends and a diverse network of bright minds. It was a first-class ticket to learning the world. ❓ Why am I writing all of this? It's that time of year when the cycle to pursue a graduate programme in the US kicks off. It starts with Fulbright. If you start late and miss it, you will regret it. 🔹 How can I help you? For over a decade, I have provided pro-bono support to aspirant Fulbrighters in the field of public policy in their application journey. The focus is on students who are not from a privileged socio-economic base, working at the grassroots, and committed to social impact. This is very important to me, as it's a precious time commitment. Even if I don't have a magic wand! ✔ Why do I do this? Pay forward. It's simple. Deepak Dogra was that to me. Also - I don't believe the folks I support should be paying ventures (mask by whatever name) to prepare for this journey. There is no travel agent who can ensure a ticket! So, why pay? 🙏 Am I decent in mentoring? Here goes a LinkedIn recommendation (see on my profile from a current Fulbrighter at Harvard): "Bala was a steadfast mentor to me during my Fulbright application process, and I owe my success at the selection process to his meticulous guidance. I have a special respect for his commitment to guiding me despite the different time zones we were in. He would undertake a deep review of my essays and would offer me very rigorous and substantial feedback. His guidance was not only limited to the content but extended to the overall temperament I must have while applying to these competitive fellowship processes. Overall, Bala is a very affable, scrupulous and inspiring mentor who constantly motivates you to give your best to any endeavour." ▶ What do you do? Reflect on whether you are eligible for Fulbright and fit my criteria for mentoring support. If so, send me a message on LinkedIn. --- Who is this for? ✅ Subject: Economics / Environmental Science / Environmental Studies / Higher Education Administration / International Affairs /International Legal Studies / Journalism and Mass Communication / Public Administration / Public Health / Urban and Regional Planning / Women’s Studies / Gender Studies. *️⃣ Key Eligibility Requirements and other application details: Read at https://lnkd.in/dSqPa9w5 #highereducation #mentoring #publicpolicy #publicadministration #socialimpact #economics #internationaldevelopment

Academic M.A. programs are under constant pressure to increase enrollment. Strong institutions like my own invest in recruiting higher numbers of excellent faculty, academic, and administrative staff to mentor ever larger cohorts. But even at the top there comes a point at which the most labor-intensive task of all teaching and mentorship - the design and execution of a year long independent research project - will be on the chopping block. I have been listening to arguments for reforming the "capstone" for more than a year now. As I am reading and evaluating the most recent batch of truly incredible M.A. theses in the University of Chicago - Committee on International Relations, I can say with confidence: Completing a demanding thesis is why our students graduate with pride, and why we continue to attract and retain the highest caliber of researcher-mentors.
