On any given night in Illinois, over 11,000 people are experiencing literal #homelessness across the state (1) - living in shelters and transitional housing programs, in parks and abandoned buildings, in cars and in barns. In addition to Illinois residents who are experiencing literal homelessness, tens of thousands of Illinois families live temporarily and unstably with family and friends. The Illinois Medical Respite Capacity Building Initiative (IMRCBI), led by the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI)with funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services and support from the Illinois Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH), was created in response to this housing crisis. Medical respite, or recuperative care, services are critical for people experiencing #homelessness to heal and recover in a safe, comfortable space. Get involved with the IMRCBI! Apply for #funding: The initiative will provide funding for planning and implementation of new or expanded medical respite services in Illinois, along with technical assistance and a learning collaborative for funded communities on developing or expanding medical respite programs that serve Illinoisians experiencing homelessness. The funding will begin on October 28, 2024 when awards will be announced, and will end on June 30, 2025: https://lnkd.in/gi5CXTi7 Join our team and apply to be the Sr. Program Manager supporting this work on the IPHI team: https://lnkd.in/gAWyMdkn. #healthequity #healthrelatedsocialneeds #housing #capacitybuilding #healthjustice

Unlocking Solutions: Tackling Trauma and Violence within San Joaquin County’s Homelessness Communities Did you know that in San Joaquin County, 20% of people experiencing homelessness continue to be traumatized as they exit permanent housing as a way to flee instances of domestic violence? Our project research has found that individuals are often forced to leave their stable housing situations due to life-threatening conditions related to violence, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Through SJMC’s PEACE project, in collaboration with JSI and St. Joseph's Medical Center, we’re dedicated to comprehending and mitigating the multifaceted challenges confronting this vulnerable population. We'd like to share insights from our recent advisory council meetings addressing trauma and violence among individuals experiencing homelessness in the area. In these collaborative sessions, facilitated by Crossroads Community Development, stakeholders from diverse sectors, including outreach workers, law enforcement, service providers, and individuals with lived experience, came together to brainstorm strategies addressing trauma & violence and draft interview questions for our upcoming key informant interviews. Key themes emerged, highlighting the importance of trust-building, trauma-informed care, and the intersectionality of factors contributing to violence. Our discussions emphasized the need for accessible language, open-ended questioning, and creating safe environments for authentic sharing. Furthermore, extensive research conducted during these meetings has shed light on the unique challenges faced by homeless communities in San Joaquin County. From examining the prevalence of trauma to identifying patterns of violence, our findings are guiding our efforts to develop targeted interventions and prevention strategies. From roleplaying interview scenarios to drafting targeted questions, each session propelled us closer to actionable solutions. We're grateful for the invaluable contributions of our partners, whose expertise and dedication enrich every step of our journey. Huge thanks to our superstar team: Debbie Rinaldo, Dyane Burgos Medina, LCSW, JD, Tammy Shaff, Annette DePauli, Jeremy Cantor, Hannah Young, Alec Shaff, and Victor Rodriguez, Crossroads' graduate student research intern from UC Davis Community Development Graduate Program. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to navigate this transformative path toward community well-being. Together, we're making a difference. #CommunityEngagement #CollaborativeAction #CommunityTransformation #SharedNarratives #HomelessnessSolutions

May is #OlderAmericansMonth, a time to recognize older Americans' contributions and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities. This year's theme is "Powered by Connection," meant to recognize the massive impact meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Did you know nearly one quarter of people experiencing homelessness in 2023 in the U.S. were 55 or older? That number is expected to grow exponentially by 2030, with many of these people experiencing homelessness for the first time. Homeless services recognize the healing power of social connections. What organizations support older Americans experiencing homelessness through fostering social connection and enrichment? 👇 Let us know in the comments! 👉 And then click here to learn more about elder homelessness and access the Council's resources on the topic: https://lnkd.in/gm6-pRRv

Join us on a journey through CCH’s past, present, and future! Part Two: The 90s. With the 90s came the Clinton presidency and the ineffective, inequitable “linear” model of treating homelessness. In the United States Council on Homelessness’ 1994 plan, President Clinton wrote, “Work organizes life.” In other words, no one experiencing homelessness should receive aid without “working for it.” This plan did more harm than good and perpetuated harmful stereotypes of who is “deserving” of support. CCH has always known that housing is a human right, not a privilege. During this decade, CCH saw the gaps in housing advocacy and sought to fill them. #CCH #history #housingjustice #civilrights #chicago #transformativejustice

As we continue to highlight that housing is essential for every human being, we must also understand the complexities of being unhoused. One of the fastest-growing populations suffering from homelessness is seniors. With inflation impacting everyone, it hits those on fixed incomes the hardest. What saddens me most is that as you age, your body starts to decline. Can you imagine being homeless with limited access to medical care and nowhere to heal from your medical conditions? Through Medi-Cal reform, temporary solutions like Post-Hospitalization funding can provide individuals with temporary housing as they heal, while simultaneously working towards permanent housing solutions to ensure they do not return to homelessness. Let’s spend more time being understanding and take action to help our fellow man.
