Our CEO Alessandro Puliti shared his insights discussing the pivotal role of offshore wind in the energy transition and the evolving landscape of the gas industry at Global Energy Transition Congress and Exhibition’s Strategic Conference, in the panel “Emboldening industries and accelerating the energy transition: Striking the right balance on the lower carbon future”. He highlighted Saipem’s experience in offshore wind, our technological developments and innovation in this field, and our leadership in all types of foundations. We completed eight offshore wind projects and are currently carrying out activities for the Courseulles-sur-Mer offshore wind farm in France. Also, our CEO underlined that gas is still the main fuel for the energy transition and that we are actively building LNG plants for our customers worldwide. A newly opened innovation centre is aiming to accelerate the position in the emerging field of floating offshore wind. Set up to support the development and validation of key technologies required for floating wind - chiefly anchors, moorings and dynamic cable systems is claimed to be the first dedicated facility of its kind in the world. To date, global floating wind capacity is modest with just a handful of test and demonstration projects up and running. Whilst most existing offshore wind turbines operate in water depths of up to around 50 metres and are mounted on foundations drilled into the seabed, moving into deeper water requires a fundamentally different approach. Essentially, this involves mounting turbines to ballast-filled floating substructures that are anchored to the seabed via mooring lines. There are a number of different methods for developers to choose from: spar-buoy systems - narrow deep platforms extending up 100metres or more below the water; semi-submersible platforms, in which the turbines are mounted on a partially submerged series of connected columns; tensioned leg platforms - in which the platform is moored to the seabed via vertical tensioned tethers; and barge mounted systems.
