It was a big week for offshore wind in Victoria with 2 major back-to-back events, the #GWEC APAC Offshore Wind and Green Hydrogen Summit in Melbourne, followed by the #GNEC Gippsland Renewable Energy Conference in Sale. We heard from several insightful speakers and panellists. Our key takeaways from the week: - Global interest: Australia is capturing the attention of large global investors. It has built a strong momentum by speedily enacting frameworks to provide developer exclusivity and allow site surveys. We have the ball, and we must not drop it - Scale and speed: We need consented, financeable projects off the ground ASAP. The real investments and supply chain commitment will happen once there is a clear pipeline of consented, financially viable projects - Grid is key: Projects need to know where they are connecting to and when. Grid planning and community engagement on transmission infrastructure must be prioritised - Route to market: More clarity is needed on what the OSW offtake regime will look like in Australia, and we need to ensure it is financeable - Community and environment: Early and proactive engagement is a must. Lessons have been learnt from other industries –offshore wind is expected to set a higher bar - Collaboration: We are aiming to do a lot in a short period, with limited resources. Circular economy principles are going to be a big part of all industries. Some sooner, others only after the kinks are ironed out, but this change is coming. It's a golden opportunity for businesses to rethink how they partner to join the wind circular economy - new revenue routes and real lasting impact on society and our planet. Some great technical challenges too, if like me you're into that sort of thing. Most of all, I'll be making sure that we get the purpose of employing circular economy principles clear and at the heart of our discussions. This is an area where we have to really work to keep our efforts aligned with our 'why'. There are a lot of good intentions but far less clear answers on what success really is. It feels like an area to walk boldly forward but always checking where you're headed.
