Recognizing that aspirations while very different in appearance to those my parents had are in essence the same principles at the core only subjected to the practices and time of practice coupled with the shifting forces of innovation. While each of us are having different experiences of reality today, the fundamentals remain, we are equitable by time and by innovation, the difference will always be in how we view the importance of acquiring, synthesizing, and utilizing information as a means to personal growth, productivity and success in various aspects of life. We must be okay with that, that everyone is fighting a battle unseen yet is natural and respect that and when the opportunity arises where paths cross, to only wish for their progress to win in small or large steps for their own advancement. As I read and re-read our National Goals and Directive Principles and Basic Social Obligation in our Constitution, I am in awe of the principles that were envision to be relevant generation to generation and innovation to innovation. #fromstoneagetodigitalagein60yrs

In the 21st century, as technology’s boundaries continually expand, a profound question demands our attention: Are we merely “human resources”—assets to be optimized and extracted, or are we “human beings”—sentient entities brimming with potential and purpose? The term “human resource” carries the weight of a bygone era, a relic from the industrial age when efficiency, conformity, and the relentless pursuit of profit defined the workplace. Back then, humans were often seen as interchangeable parts of a vast economic machine, valued primarily for their ability to perform repetitive tasks. But we have evolved. ➡ Today, we stand at the threshold of a new epoch, one defined not by the brawn of industry but by the brilliance of ideas. In the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world we now navigate, the limitations of treating people as mere resources become starkly apparent. Machines, with their precision and predictability, are masters of routine. ➡ However, they falter when confronted with the nuances of creativity, the subtleties of intuition, and the depths of compassion—qualities that are uniquely human. These are not resources to be managed but qualities to be nurtured, celebrated, and unleashed. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a global wake-up call, revealing the fragility of systems that rely too heavily on mechanistic approaches. In the face of unprecedented challenges, it was not algorithms that led the way; it was human ingenuity, empathy, and the ability to adapt on the fly.  The shift from a “just in time” mentality to a “just in case” approach underscored the irreplaceable value of human foresight and creativity. It was a reminder that in moments of crisis, the true strength of any organization lies not in its resources but in its people—its human beings. To persist in viewing humans as resources is to deny the very essence of our existence. We are not cogs in a machine, disposable and replaceable. We are conscious agents of change, co-creators of our collective future. It is time to discard the outdated paradigm of resource management and embrace a new ethos - one that recognizes and honours our humanity in its fullest expression and focusses on unlocking potential rather than extracting mechanical value alone. As we forge ahead into the future, let us affirm with conviction: “I am not a ‘Human Resource’; I am a Human Being” #humanresource #humanbeing

How Criteria Can Affect Perceptions of Value

It is useful to take a step back and ask what are the basic assumptions that are implicitly taken for granted in futures work. Plenty of new careers and jobs in the future, but I keep wondering what they mean with a "job." Is it a form of productive socially structured action that transforms the material and mental reality? Paid labor or social regeneration, in the Arendtian sense? Something that we don't have a word yet? The concept of productive work is the linchpin of the modern world. It comes with a bunch of concepts that define how we see the world. Among those are progress, innovation, growth, sustainability, fairness, system/agency, impact, etc. In the industrial world, work became such a central concept that almost everything of importance is organized around it. If we transition from that towards something new, a key question will be how the concept of work becomes reconstructed. This has implications in all areas of life, from financing nation states to distribution of power, family structures, education, etc. Maybe the different experts had different assumptions? As an historian and change maker, I love future-casting as an exercise to understand our role as human beings in shaping the course of events that affect our society and planet. 🌎 My absolutely favorite virtuoso history-obsessed-future-caster is Pavel Luksha, who bravely architected a collaborative effort with BCG to talk about the future of work. This report is a revelation. 🚀 Although it is about the future of work, it highlights the importance of precisely the kind of work we do at The History Co:Lab: shifting education systems so that they prepare young people to thrive and step into their role as makers of our shared history. 💡 The BCG report states that human creativity, relationships, and sustainability are at the core of societal progress.
