To a limit of KES. 250K, PCF provides some relief to claimants and beneficiaries of those insurance policies get some relief. All insurance policies are canceled once an insurer is placed under Statutory Management, or their license is canceled. However, the Government mandates the Policyholders Compensation Fund to compensate you for your losses, thus cushioning you from huge financial losses. #KnowYourRight

Welcome to the world of being a patient or a caregiver in the complex, fragmented, expensive, and downright 'mean' healthcare system, Dr. Adams. Being a Patient/Caregiver is the most difficult job there is. T There is so much in your story, but I wish you could have given us more insight into your experience. You say you were dehydrated....why? N/V/D other reasons? What made 'this' an emergency? Today, people are discouraged from going to an ED as it is the most expensive means to get care. The rule most managed care companies ask us to follow in their member handbook is if you are not feeling well: 1. Call your PCP; 2. use the nurse call line if your managed care company has one, as they can advise you on many issues. 3. You can also visit an urgent care center for more serious things. 5. As a last resort, you can go to the ED. We are asking the person who is sick or their family to decide on what level of care they should choose. Family members might have been up all night with someone who is sick. They need help in this system. They are people, not healthcare professionals. YOU chose the ED (which you probably needed), But many people don't know the best things to do when they are sick, they go to the ED. How do we help them? I noted that you also went to the ED by ambulance. Why? You must have been sick, very sick...to do that. Getting to a place for care is challenging for so many people, but Ambulance rides are expensive and not covered by most insurance. Many people take busses, or ask family if they can't drive so that means taking time off from work, or transferring on busses...... Today, I am working as a Nurse Advocate to help people (patients and their caregivers) know how to use their voices (as you are) to address challenges in the HC System. Patient/Health Advocates work with people to coordinate care, understand their medical conditions, and find resources on their journey. Some also review bills and address them when they are out of line. Most people don't know they can question a bill - but we have to, as there are mistakes in billing/coding that raise costs or charge people for things they have not received. Humans perform healthcare, and we all make mistakes. By educating the patient/consumer/family to understand how the system works and who the people are in the system who can help them (Patient/Health/Nurse Advocates, case managers, etc.), we educate and empower people to become their own best advocates. As you say, if you, with your expertise and status, have this happen to you - how does the average Joe do it? That is why patient/health advocates are in place. So everyone has a voice, knows their roles, has realistic expectations, and gets the help/care they need. Thank you for sharing your story, and I hope you are doing better.
