This is such an important story! And one that illustrates just how slow change can be … and yet it’s possible. As someone who deploys into disasters to provide disaster mental health and stress management support through a non profit called Green Cross Academy of Traumatology, I’ve seen first hand and talked with people who have devastating losses and are trying to get help. The process and paperwork is foreign to them, the wait seems like eternity and the ability to reason, take in new information and simply to think is compromised due to the trauma of the experience even separate from the loss of something as core to themselves and their families as their homes. People who live in remote communities have a resilience that isn’t always matched in other locations so a complete sense of helplessness is even harder to deal with. When the “help” has so many barriers it becomes more than many can manage, they sometimes give up. These changes will make a difference. They won’t fix everything, but they will help those who will be impacted by disaster in the future. Thank you to everyone who doesn’t give up when things need to change. #greencrossacademyoftraumatology #mentalhealth #emergencymanagement #disasterrecovery

It is time to acknowledge a behind-the-scenes person who deserves sincere credit for bringing the deficiencies of the FEMA Individual Assistance (IA) program to light in isolated Alaska Native Communites. Specifically, those impacted by 2022's Typhoon Merbok. Emily Schwing is a relentless reporter and has been focused on exposing the real world implications of a flawed policy that many of us in Emergency Management have been emphasizing for years. Her tenacity in not allowing small and often forgotten Merbok-impacted communities to simply fade into disaster memory has, in my opinion, made an impact that is now resulting in some of these critical changes. Thank you, Emily for illuminating the challenges of many Alaska Native Communities, post-Merbok! Thank you FEMA and Deanne Criswell for listening and making it happen. My first exposure to a disaster was witnessing the aftermath of a tornado in Barrie, Ontario, in 1985. Fast-forward to 2007, and during my studies, I found myself educating the wives of British soldiers at CFB Suffield about the risks of tornados and what actions to take should one ever come through the base. Over the years, our military family has lived in various locations, each bringing unique risks that found us experiencing emergencies first-hand. 1997 - Winnipeg Floods 2003 - Blackout in Toronto 2005 - London, UK subway bombing (living on a British Forces base) 2008 - Blizzard in Southern Alberta (Suffield) 2012 - Grassfires in Lethbridge (daughter#1 attending U of L) 2018 - Wildfires in Kelowna (daughter #3 attending UBCO) 2023 - Yellowknife Wildfire (daughter #3 evacuated) We've also had family experience the impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms in Nova Scotia and Quebec. It's no wonder I became interested in disaster and emergency management! We live in a vast country with many risks at our doorstep. Nobody thinks it will happen to them, but it does. Understand what risks are in your area and learn what actions you can take to protect yourselves and your families. Let's keep everyone safe. #EPWeek2024. #BePrepared. #KnowTheRisks. #HaveAPlan. #MakeAKit. #StayInformed. #ReadyForAnything
