While many disasters garner national and even international attention, the greatest effects are felt at a local level. This is one of the reasons The Salvation Army puts a focus on the full life cycle of disaster recovery and not just immediate response. In March of 2023, the town of Rolling Fork, MS saw entire neighborhoods leveled by powerful tornadoes, and recovery is still underway over a year later. A dedicated case manager works with survivors to oversee these projects and guide them through the process of recovery. After more than a year of living apart, Betty and her husband were thrilled to move into their new home and be back together as a family. “We really appreciate what you are doing and have done,” Betty shared. “You are still here, and that means a lot.” Read more: https://loom.ly/E9-XaRg

The cast of TWISTERS knows disasters can strike anywhere without warning and they've generously created this PSA to support Disaster Relief. In recent weeks, swarms of tornadoes and extreme flooding have taken lives and destroyed communities. Millions of people have endured one of the longest lasting and strongest heat waves in years, including large portions of the Midwest. In Arkansas, Ohio and Nebraska, neighbors are recovering from the second most active tornado season on record, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. Already this year, the Red Cross has responded to 20 tornado disasters across 13 states. More powerful and destructive storms are expected this summer. Visit your local Red Cross online for disaster preparedness tips and resources or donate to Disaster Relief at redcross.org/twisters.

Western North Carolina is being neglected, and it’s unacceptable. The devastation from the recent hurricane is being minimized as if it were just another small storm. The slow government response is layered in red tape and bureaucracy, and it’s hurting people. This area has smaller populations, but that doesn’t make their suffering any less real. It seems like a lack of political advantage is causing this inaction, especially when decisions appear to prioritize migrant assistance over taking care of Americans at home. The recent failures in disaster management—from Secret Service issues to now FEMA’s unqualified leadership—are a pattern of incompetence. Our people are being ignored. It’s time to stand up, speak out, and demand better from those in charge. Western NC deserves the same attention and resources as any other region hit by a disaster. We need action now—not excuses, delays, or half-measures.

Malibu had an earthquake this morning, Southern California (and elsewhere) is battling multiple wildfires and the Gulf coast was struck by another hurricane yesterday. Disasters can, do and will happen anywhere, anytime. If one of these events happened in your area today, would you know what to do? Would you be able to act quickly and safely? If you had to evacuate, what then? What about the day after? THIS is why preparedness is so important! And it doesn't have to be hard: start by thinking about what you'd need if you had to leave your home for 3 days. Visit the link in the comments to learn more and prepare your household today! #NationalPreparednessMonth

The more I market in coastal areas the more I believe that we need to come up with a standalone wind/hail loss payment schedule policy. Year after year the hurricane severity increases and tornado losses exacerbate the funds available to pay for those types of losses.. Should there be a Federal fund in place for people and communities within these areas for disaster relief?

Life throws curveballs, and sometimes those curveballs come in the form of natural disasters. That's where we come in ⬇️ Did you know FEEA offers disaster relief grants to help federal employees get back on their feet? Since 1986, FEEA has been there for over 14,000 families facing the aftermath of hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and other emergencies. See how FEEA supported families following natural disasters in our 2023 Annual Report. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4cAcIOz #FederalEmployees #Disasters #Support #AnnualReport

Recent hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, and wildfires have underscored the need for disaster preparedness for all Americans. Yet, FEMA reports that half of Americans haven't created a family emergency plan. Since 2003, this campaign has empowered individuals, families, small businesses, and communities to prepare for disasters. The "Ready" campaign suggests three steps: 1) assess your needs, 2) make a plan, and 3) engage your support network. #fibernow #opticaltel

IMPORTANT REMINDERS We are five days out from a major disaster across the Texas Gulf Coast. As power begins to come back on, please know the following: * Wharton County still has over 4,000 power outages. *Power being restored doesn't mean it is connected to houses. Those lines might be down. *On a 1.0 scale, Wharton County's SOCIAL VULNERABILITY INDEX is high, with even higher numbers for Cities of Wharton and El Campo (See the image). Our highest demographics are senior adults and children. That means we are more highly impacted during a disaster. *THIS IS A DISASTER. The damage is not "just vegetative" and we have humanitarian needs. It is also not "just" in areas previously affected by flooding disasters. We have small isolated communities and residences in the county and need to get eyes on them and resources to them. People have damaged cars, inability to get gas and inability to get to cooling centers and mass feeding locations. *It is possible to still have disaster fatalities this far out. A heat wave is the greatest contributing factor to fatalities after a disaster. *If your agency serves home health patients or families with children, please contact us to document unmet needs. *We need help getting damage documented in iSTAT for survivors who can't do it themselves. Please help someone if you are able and support the local non-profits responding to this disaster. ❗ New blog 📰 from Team IEM! Check out the details ⤵️ With the increase in frequency and severity of disasters, communities across the nation face devastating impacts from wildfires, hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, and severe winter storms. 🔥🌀⛈️🌪️💥❄️ After a disaster hits, survivors are vulnerable as they face the uphill task of recovering and rebuilding their homes and lives. FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) is meant to help the process – and yet the DRF is currently in Immediate Needs Funding status, lacking the funds to ensure speedy recoveries for affected communities. Team IEM Senior Executive Advisors and former FEMA officials, Elizabeth Zimmerman and Edward (Ed) Johnson, shed light on the status of the FEMA DRF, how the current limitations affect community recovery nationwide, and the urgency of replenishing the DRF to maximize recovery efforts. ✨ Read the 🆕 blog for more insight: https://lnkd.in/erVJZjZe #TeamIEM #IEMblog #IEMnewsroom #FEMA #DisasterRelief #DisasterReliefFund #disasterrecovery #emergencymanagement #disastermanagement #INF #ImmediateNeedsFunding #hurricaneseason #wildfires #disasters #flooding #recovery #FEMADRF #DRF #disasterrelief #disasterfunding #disasterresponse

🙏 If there were a single adjective to describe disasters of recent memory, it would likely be “unprecedented.” Wildfires have sparked suddenly and quickly burned out of control, incinerating established towns. Hurricanes have formed with surprising speed and intensity, unabashedly appearing outside regimented seasons and locations. Rain, so much rain, has blanketed areas that are ill-equipped to handle such ferocious storms, leading to flooding and mudslides in steady succession. 💔 And that’s without mentioning the consequences of when land has become too dry, or shook, or covered in heavy snow. All of that has happened, too. It seems like more and more disasters are happening all at once. 💬 “One thing about disasters is that they don’t discriminate,” said Ian Anderson, Director of Emergency/Disaster Services (EDS) and Service Extension in The Salvation Army’s Intermountain Division. “They can impact everyone and anyone.” 🔗Learn how The Salvation Army prepares to respond to unprecedented disaster here: https://lnkd.in/dthVsE75 #LoveBeyondDisaster #DoGood
