People who don't work in news often ask me what the most important job in a newsroom is--mine? Sort of. Anchor? Sure, they're the face of the franchise. Production crew? Quite literally can't do it without them. But the answer I come around to most often--with admitted bias, given my professional upbringing--is producer. A station could have the best talent in the business, the best news director and EPs and crew and photogs and assignment desk...yet none of that greatness can be realized without a producer to make it all come together. It's not magic, though some days it feels akin to sorcery. It takes passion, purpose, courage and personality to craft the thing that thousands-to-millions of viewers will sit down and watch as an integral part of their day. And my *WORD* is it fun. Before you pick up your remote and tune in to ChannelOne TV at 8 p.m. each day, a lot happens behind the scenes. As a news producer for the station’s flagship news program, I play several key roles to ensure my team delivers impactful and accurate stories daily: 1. Content Selection: In collaboration with the news editor, we decide which stories will be covered, selecting the most relevant and important issues based on newsworthiness, audience interest, and editorial priorities. 2. Time Management: I manage the timing of the broadcast, ensuring that stories fit within their allotted time slots and the show stays on schedule. 3. Overseeing Live Broadcasts: During the broadcast, I stay in constant communication with anchors, reporters, and the technical crew, making real-time decisions and adjustments in response to breaking news or unexpected changes. 4. Fact-Checking and Accuracy: I ensure that all information presented is accurate and verified by working closely with the news team to fact-check sources and details. 5. Editing: I may also edit video clips, sound bites, and graphics to fit the narrative of the news, ensuring that visuals align seamlessly with the script. A news producer is essentially the backbone of the broadcast, coordinating every element to ensure a smooth, professional, and engaging bulletin. #journalism #news

I asked 10 of my Producer friends what they totally EXPECT from on-air talent - let's gooooo: Don't Be A Dick: The production is not about you and everyone has put a lot of hard work into creating a rundown. Be respectful. Be Calm: When things go wrong in the gallery do not be mad. Stay calm and understand that we are trying our best. Time Management: Respect production schedules by being punctual and efficient during meetings and broadcast. Stay On-Brand: Consistently represent the network's image and values, even off-camera. Be Prepared: Come to broadcasts with a deep understanding of the content and rundown, ready to engage without needing extensive coaching. Adapt to Changes: Be flexible and adapt quickly to last-minute script or segment changes without showing frustration. Continuous Improvement: Seek feedback and show a willingness to improve skills and on-screen presence. Limit Personal Opinions: Keep personal opinions, especially controversial ones, in check to maintain the show's neutrality. Professionalism: Maintain professionalism at all times, avoiding gossip or negative comments about colleagues or competitors. We hear you in the gallery because you're wearing a mic!
