"And when you push for implementation and they say, "I'll try", you should get a sinking feeling in your stomach. Because this really means, "I plan to fail". - Christopher Voss from Never Split the Difference.
This quote from Chris Voss is more in the context of negotiation but I like how related these two ideas are.
We should work hard to create environments where mistakes and failure are ok.
Let me be clear, OK meaning allowed, not OK as in we're accepting mistakes and failures and brushing them aside. We need to learn and improve if we want to win.
They're OK because this allows people to really commit to something.
I will hit my numbers...
I will complete this project...
I will run a marathon...
You might fail, and that's ok, because with the mindset of "I plan to succeed", you can push to your absolute best.

1moEarly in my career, I was told, "Be a leader, not a manager, and you'll be much happier." That young dude always thought management was leadership. Talk about the ups and downs of figuring that one out -phew.
