"WHAT SHOULD I DO? " S-4 I haven't shared it online but have shared with my colleagues about what I feel we as psychology students often engage in role-playing as both therapists and patients during our training, but there's a gap in helping us understand ourselves on a deeper personal level. When I was doing my graduation and post graduation in psychology I always questioned "we spread awareness among students of other departments why taking time for yourself and talking to a psychologist might help" but we as the psychology students were not ready to do the same with the psychologists in our department because of various reasons/ biases/ethical issues. Providing individual therapy as part of a psychology program can offer numerous benefits. Many therapists/budding psychologists experience burnout due to the emotional demands of their work. Having a space to process their emotions early on can prevent burnout and foster longevity in their careers. By experiencing their own therapeutic process as the part of their curriculum, can help the students to better understand the power dynamics and ethical dilemmas that may arise in therapy. I feel there should be a separate appointed clinical psychologist for individual therapy for students and staff of the psychology department specifically who is not involved in clinical/academic setting of students. P S: I know there's a long way to go for this kind of curriculum looking at the current scenario of RCIs decisions Ultimately, therapy should be viewed as an essential part of training in psychology, ensuring that students are not just intellectually equipped but also emotionally and ethically prepared for the demands of their future careers. #Psychologystudents #mentalhealth #therapyforstudents #psychologists

It is rather confusing to see everything happening on the Bsc Clinical Psychology curriculum. This is my way to try to bring some clarity on some of the directives of the provision! There is tremendous need for psychologists in educational policy making!! Hmm, yes!! We can aggressively contribute great part, as there is scope to introduce many aspects into the system. We grown up listening to criticism of the “education system and it’s false application” At the end of every evening tea-time debates we hear that, “it’s system fault, our education system should change” But you know, while we are busy criticising the system. Entrepreneurs are coming up with ideas that can potentially replace some parts of it, from teaching soft skills to teaching financial discipline. Let me share a story about me attending a 4-day course on Improved memory, learning methods, secrets to high performance and having a clear cut-road map to future aspirations. I was 15 years old when london trained psychologist came to my home town and promoted this course. After a demo session, every parent that attended was soo mad that they wanted pay half of their child’s tuition fee for a 4 day course. I attended that session, it helped me alot and I genuinely believe that it shouldn’t be that expensive and can be simply added to school curriculum, students would love it. It was after doing bachelors in psychology that I realized , these methods are grounded in psychological theories of learning. There is a wide range of learning methods/strategies/ approaches in educational psychology that facilitate how individuals acquire, process and retain knowledge. These methods are grounded in various psychological theories about how people learn, with a focus on cognitive, emotional, and social factors that influence the learning process. But unfortunately, large portion of Psychology students wanna get into therapy, mental health issues/ clinical practice. There used to be stigma that psychology was about “mind reading” Now I am afraid that people, including those pursuing psychology think that it’s all about mental health issues. I am very optimistic that other branches of psychology also have great value, we could possibly build careers. I would highly encourage fellow aspiring psychologists to consider other branches aswell, especially education(it’s very interesting :p) Note: Please correct me if I am wrong about some aspects, always open to constructive criticism :) Photo: It’s one of my favourite pictures with my friend Nanda Joga , I always tell him that we look like co-founders and we should manifest it , haha )

My two cents on RCI’s recent notification to regulate the profession of counselling psychology in India: A professional training in CLINICAL Psychology at an undergraduate level, under the nomenclature “B.Sc. CLINICAL Psychology (Hons.)”, to be taught largely by CLINICAL psychologists, prepares graduates to register as COUNSELLING Psychologists ?!?!? Moving away from the holistic approach of a biopsychosocial model, allowing students only with a science background to pursue the profession perhaps reduces the application of psychology to a medical, problem-focused and deterministic focus. Furthermore, RCI quite conveniently introduces NEP 2020 on the very first page of its notification and then goes on to discuss the introduction of this new program in line with NEP 2020’s recommendations to have more professional undergraduate courses. Does it overlook the part where NEP 2020 also recommends “no hard separations between arts and sciences” so students can flexibly “choose their learning trajectories” and also “to eliminate harmful hierarchies between different areas of learning”? If students were to choose subjects of their choice instead of a particular stream during high school, who exactly qualifies as coming from a science stream or equivalent? And more importantly: Who exactly were on the panel that structured this program and prepared the guidelines to regulate this profession?

Hundreds of Australian students are being turned away from postgraduate psychology courses each year. Australia is witnessing a surging demand for registered psychologists. Our country is facing a mental health crisis, and the Federal Government is only meeting 35% of its psychology workforce target, which is the largest shortfall of all mental health professions. Despite the overwhelming demand for psychologists in Australia, postgraduate psychology courses are critically underfunded, resulting in severely limited Commonwealth Supported Places within these courses in Australian Universities. The consequence of this chronic underfunding of postgraduate psychology is that undergraduate students are forced to compete for the exceedingly limited places available in such courses in order to gain registration as a psychologist Please sign this petition to urge the government to put more funding into postgraduate psychology courses, to help address this shortfall in practitioners and make postgraduate study in psychology more accessible. The other day, I had a conversation with my then supervisor- these are the conversations worth having- where he told me about his interaction with a student pursuing an M.phil in Clinical Psychology. The student was also working under the supervision of a clinical psychologist at that institute (just for namesake) and went on to answer some questions related to practice in a way that reflected a lack of knowledge. I see some serious students of psychology focus on the names of the institute instead of the faculty or the coursework. Well, yes, faculty may not be good everywhere as we know many courses require us students to understand the concepts on our own (I am not justifying it, but the education sector is improving at a snail's pace) - researching on our own with all the available resources, but the fact that a practitioner does not have complete information about the scientific approaches is similar to the life coach offering therapy- because later (life coach) understood the human behaviour from reading nonfiction or listening to the experiences of others which could be a false interpretation and the former (that student) with their lack of understanding but having the confidence of dealing with clients because of pursuing a certain degree (I am not saying a degree is not important) from a particular institute which could further deteriorate the situation. The point is that the mental health field is growing, and with this development, certain rigid notions need to be tackled because they oppose the assistance that could be available to people with emotional distress and also increase distress in the students of psychology. Like 'only certain institutes will make you a counseling psychologist,' but the students should focus on understanding the course details offered by that institute- does that institute include therapies in their coursework or is the faculty there a practitioner? If not, is that institute ready to assist them in getting internships where they get practical exposure, etc? Also, don't just limit yourself to the coursework; interact with other practitioners, find the books that would help you understand the scientific approaches in our field, explore and keep on learning. Sticking oneself to a particular knowledge and not being connected to the ongoing research or approaches could also limit your practice, which would then reflect in your practice. Also, being a counseling psychologist is not just about getting a degree to practise but also about committing to continue learning beyond the boundaries of that degree. P.S.: This post isn't directed at the recent notification from RCI. More on that later. #psychologist #counselingpsychologist #counsellingpsychologist #humanbehaviour #psychology #mentalhealth #bsc #ba

So much has already been written. For me, it's clear , that nothing is still clear in the minds of Niti Ayog, RCI and UGC, the "Mai baaps" of Psychology Professionals in the country. 1. Do you want to make Clinical Psychology a medical model? 12 Science Eligibility - Right Graduation - 4 years - Right, What's still lacking? Theory hours should be more, because it is a vast subject and in the proposed course, theory hours are much less to do justice to teaching the conceptual frameworks comprehensively. There should be a seperate provision of atleast, 1 or 1 and a half years of internship like in other medical courses, to give enough clinical exposure of taking cases, administering assessments, learning to diagnose, applying interventions and doing follow-ups. the degree should be Bachelor's in Clinical Psychology and these Bachelor's should be able to practice like a GP. For further Studies, super specialisation subjects should be introduced, could be problem or disorder based/ population based/ Modality based. 2. Do you want to keep Clinical and Counseling Psychology seperate? Nomenclature: Wrong. There had to be a clear cut distinction as to who can become Clinical Psychologists and who can become Counseling Psychologists. Eligibility for course : Wrong. For Counseling Psychologists, students from Humanities should also be eligible. There is no clarity on the mandate as to what is the scope and limitations for practice for Counseling Psychologists. 3. Do you want to include other branches of Psychology? Where are guidelines for them? 4. Are you concerned about the quantity of mental health professionals and their lack of? Where are the guidelines to license and regularise those who are already under the previous format of education or are just pass outs or are already practicing but who have not followed the traditional path especially in Graduation? It is half baked. Not well thought of. Doled out without enough consultation and brainstorming with the stakeholders.
