Emmanuel Perrin Boasting the coolest climate in the south of the Rhône Valley and preserved landscapes, the Ventoux vineyard is popular. In recent years, the establishment of ambitious winegrowers and the rise of white wines have been the talk of the town. In the Ventoux appellation, in just 4 years, the production of white wines has increased by more than a third of its initial volumes. And more than 12% of this 5,500 hectare vineyard is already planted with white grape varieties. It must be said that the combination of limestone terroir and cool climate favors the production of a color that many vineyards in the southern zone envy in Ventoux. “Benefiting from this freshness and such thermal amplitudes, due to the proximity of Mont Ventoux, allows us to have more sparkling whites and with better acidity. In addition, our ampelographic richness, with the Grenache Blanc, Clairette but also Roussanne, Viognier, Vermentino, Bourboulenc, etc. grape varieties, constitutes a formidable toolbox for creating wide ranges in a territory that lends itself to it,” explains Frédéric. Treasury Wine Estates just announced its $1 billion acquisition of Daou Vineyards, Paso Robles. Here's my report on Daou Vineyards - fabulous wines and venue - which I visited a few months back for the second time. Daou and others in Paso Robles are making this a wine tourism region competitive with Napa and Sonoma. Mega wine producer, Sydney, Australia-based Treasury Wine Estates (already with U.S. properties) bought Daou to add to its luxury portfolio. According to the Wall Street Journal, "Treasury said it has agreed to pay $900 million upfront for what it called the fastest-growing luxury wine brand in U.S. trade over the 12 months through Oct. 8. It could pay up to $100 million in additional earn-outs linked to growth targets over the three years through 2027." I say, this acquisition raises the stakes in the U.S. wine industry in several dimensions. On another note, the Daou brother-owners got out of strife-torn Lebanon in the 1970’s.
