Currently, it is legal to discriminate against a person in the workplace, schools, and/or pools because of their natural or protective hairstyle in all states except for California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware, New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, Illinois, Maine, Tennessee, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Alaska, Michigan, Texas, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Vermont. Hair discrimination remains a source of racial injustice with serious economic consequences for Black people. The CROWN Act corrects these racial injustice by making race-based hair discrimination illegal. The CROWN Coalition (Dove, National Urban League, Color Of Change, and Western Center on Law & Poverty) believes natural and protective hairstyles should be celebrated, not discouraged. For this reason, they are committed to Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair. National CROWN Day is a special holiday commemorating the inaugural signing of the first CROWN Act legislation in California on July 3, 2019, to “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.” Through every twist, curl, and coil, we discover the beauty of acceptance and the importance of self-appreciation. CROWN Love isn't just about hairstyles; it's a journey of self-discovery, self-care, and self-love. Together, we bask in the warmth of self-acceptance and celebrate the unique beauty of every CROWN, fostering a supportive movement that embraces and uplifts all. #JackandJillofAmerica #SigmaGammaRho #CROWNLove #TheCROWNAct #CROWNCoalition #Dove (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed here belong solely to me and do not reflect the views of my employer, Evanta, a Gartner Company)

The C.R.O.W.N Act stands for “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair”, a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination in the workplace and schools. It is a campaign led by the CROWN Coalition, founded by Dove, National Urban League, Color of Change and Western Center on Law & Poverty. At #EvaNYC, we truly believe that hair is our crown. It’s part of how we express ourselves to the world and should be honored and celebrated, not used as a means for discrimination. As of 2024, only 23 states have enacted #TheCROWNAct into law, meaning there’s more work to do in ending hair discrimination nationwide. ✨ Join us as we support the movement, visit the link below and vote YES on The CROWN Act! ✨ https://lnkd.in/dpdbAxd To learn more about hair bias, natural hair tips from experts and how to promote powerful and positive interactions in the workplace, visit: www.thecrownact.com. #PassTheCROWN

July 3 is CROWN Day, marking 5 years since the CROWN Act was first passed in CA. Since then, 25 states have passed the CROWN Act to protect BiPOC folks from hair-based discrimination at work and school. "Lawmakers in the remaining half of states with no CROWN Act—as well as members of Congress—have one clear piece of unfinished business they should prioritize for the next session: making sure Black and brown people are protected against hair-based discrimination," writes Jasmine Payne-Patterson. This issue is one of the reasons the CROWN Act was created. “The CROWN Act, created in 2019 by Dove and the CROWN Coalition, in partnership with then State Senator Holly J. Mitchell of California, to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools.” “While progress has been made, race-based hair discrimination remains a systemic problem in the workplace – from hiring practices to daily workplace interactions – disproportionately impacting Black women’s employment opportunities and professional advancement. To bring awareness to this issue, Dove and LinkedIn co-commissioned the 2023 CROWN Workplace Research Study, detailing the systemic social and economic impact of hair bias and discrimination against Black women in the workplace in 2023, further proving the urgent need for change.” Read more in the comments about this issue and follow DirectEmployers Association for future DE Under Three videos!
In this episode, John and Candee discuss a recent consent decree issued to a company that prohibited an African American employee from wearing her hair in its natural state, how this violated Title VII’s Ban on Race Discrimination, and their hopes for legal change in the future.

Dove has long championed the CROWN Act along with the National Urban League, Color Of Change, and Western Center On Law & Poverty. In a partnership with LinkedIn, Dove commissioned a study to provide the facts on bias against natural hair. The CROWN Act is not law in 27 US states, meaning those professionals and students living in these states still face discrimination and associated negative behaviors towards the hair that naturally grows from their head - without any legal repercussions. It is to everyone's best interest to actively fight against racial bias. Strict policies on and the policing of natural hair creates toxic environments where individuals feel pressured to conform or else they will face retaliation - and these external unhealthy behaviors often amplify. In 2024, it is outrageous that such discrimination is permitted in schools and workplaces. Being allowed to show up to work or school authentically is essential to feeling secure and safe in an environment. The video campaign is a wake up call and message to Corporate America: Black hair is professional, natural hair is professional, and protective styles are professional. #diversityandinclusion #edi #antidiscrimination #workplaceculturematters
