At the start of every one to one coaching session, I support my client to 'check in'. In a work meeting environment, the check in is an opportunity to share whatever each person needs or wants to share to feel connected, present and ready for the meeting. And that in itself is a powerful process. But during one to one coaching, we take the opportunity to go a little deeper... ======> After some deep breaths, we mentally scan the physical body, from head to toe, without judgement or analysis and we notice what's there... It might be tension, pain, stress, stuckness, ease, flow, intensity, relaxation or comfort. And whatever the client wishes to share about they notice, they can share. ===========> The next phase of the check in is to scan the mental body.  ...Without the need to change or fix anything.  We might notice busyness, quiet, pace, distraction, presence, concern, curiosity, intensity, openness. We just notice what's there. ==================> The next scan we run is of the emotional body. We notice the feelings that are there including any joy, fear, sadness, loneliness, love, fulfilment, excitement... And we notice which parts of our body these emotions are most felt. ===========================> Finally, we scan the spiritual body. And this one means something different for everyone. It might mean noticing where we feel most connected with ourselves, or checking in with a part of us that we identify as our soul. It might mean scanning our sense of connection with something bigger than us or feeling how and where we feel most connected to our loved ones. Whether it's within our own body or the way our body connects with the energy of the broader world, we take a minute to notice where our spiritual body lives and how it feels. 🤗 After checking in with each part of the body, the client can write down or share what they notice. The key being that there is no judgement, analysis, need to change, fix or alter anything. When did it become okay to take more than we need? When did we start putting individual gain above collective connection? When did the boundaries around us stop protecting us and start isolating us? When did digital popularity become more important than social contribution? When will we reach the tipping point that will mean we start healing these wounds? When will our differences be a source of inspiration instead of fear? When will we realise that we are all fallible? When will be stop fighting the idea that love really does cure everything? When will ALL our businesses become a genuine force for good? When will we value all our fellow humans no matter their education, status, background, religion, ability, health, accent or upbringing? When will we recognise the true gifts we each have? When will this happen? It will happen one step at a time.... When we reflect on our own truths and blind spots. When we learn about our truest selves and accept our weaknesses and real strengths. When we recognise that the pain of our past experiences can be healed and integrated. When we tap into our inner knowledge as the invaluable resource it is. When we use our whole bodies, not just our minds, as indicators for our success. My highlights from Obama's keynote speech in Chicago yesterday...... True freedom is recognising that someone else might make a different decision that the one we make, and that's okay. Democracy is the values we live by..... the way we treat each other, even those who don't look like us, pray like us or see the world exactly like we do. Mutual respect is a fundamental part of the message..... To make progress, we must remember we all have blind spots and we must listen to those with different opinions to us. The world is moving fast and we must give everyone grace.... but when we uphold our values, the world becomes a little brighter. We will never eradicate wrongdoings or injustice but that doesn't mean we can't be a force for good. Today's culture puts a premium on things that don't last.... money, fame, power, status, likes.... It teaches us to characterise ourselves and each other and this causes the appearance of division, isolation and fear. ......But the connections between us are still there and we can see them in how we support each other through community, friendships, family, purpose and love. And most of all, this message came through loudly..... When the other side, does something we might not like or agree with, don't boo ======> VOTE! It's as important for everyone to have a voice in our businesses as it is to have a voice in our democracy. The values of democracy and the values of #LeadingBeyondHierarchy are similarly aligned. They both require the ability to listen, reflect, lead, speak up, pursue purpose, be brave, forgive, share and support each other. Obama's speech painted a grand vision.... an almost idealistic version of how we might be able to live. There are so many narratives out there about what a leader should or shouldn't do..... The servant leader.... the corporate leader...... the compassionate leader...... the visionary leader..... the genius leader....... the powerful leader...... And the reality is that true leadership is as unique as your own fingerprint. =====> No-one can replicate the way you lead when you're embodying your whole self. The passion, authenticity, vision, care, drive and intuition that is uniquely yours has a narrative of its own. And that's why working one to one with leaders is such a privilege for me. The deeply personal and most powerful parts of us are often hidden away..... .....concealed by past traumas, learned habits, lack of time, external pressures, false ideas, sub-conscious dynamics.... But it's the most energising thing you can do to step into coaching sessions that support you to connect with the real you. ===============> When we tap into your true source of confidence, dynamism, trust and belief, the energy we find is extraordinary. From a young age, we’re conditioned to follow rules, meet expectations, and tick boxes — leaving little room for true autonomy. This mindset carries over into our careers, where we're often praised for sticking to the script rather than thinking independently. So.......... In the build up to the Women's 10m Dive Final, Andrea Spendolini-Siriex said this....... "Pressure kills joy.... So if you're under pressure and you get a good result, you feel relief. But I don't want to feel relief. I want to feel joy." What a mature quote from a young woman who for all intents and purposes, was probably under a huge amount of pressure. =====> What does this quote tell us about the generation of young people who are entering society, building their wisdom and growing their impact our workplaces, politics, economics and communities? How curious that during the same Olympic coverage, another athlete was quoted as saying 'Pressure creates diamonds.' In an era where there is no shortage of mental health stories, depression, anxiety, self-medication and addictions.... not to mention the rise of healing pathways, spiritual narratives and support for deep rest and balanced living, should we be more discerning about the soundbites we give airtime to? 🤔 It seems fairly clear to me that some people thrive on pressure. They enjoy the weight of expectation and their innate sense of value come from what they achieve. And thank goodness for these people. 💁♀️ But my sense is that there are more people than we might realise for whom pressure is not a healthy motivating factor. I believe Spendolini-Siriex's quote is an indicator of a shifting outlook. One that says.... Yes, it's important to rise to the pressure in some moments and situations. But it's even more important to recognise the value of our experience in any given moment and find joy wherever there might be opportunity for joy. Where do you sit on this one? Does pressure equal positive motivation for you? Or does pressure kill your sense of joy? Do you feel relief when a good result comes in that you've been working on? Or do you feel gratitude for the experience, regardless of the result? =====> And more importantly, what does this change of outlook mean for how our businesses and incentives should be structured? If pressure does indeed kill joy, how should we be consciously developing the culture of our workplaces to adapt for the younger generation? #leadingbeyondhierarchy #workplaceculture #orgculture
