Staff at Barclays Bank donated toys to our Christmas Present Appeal and lent a helping hand to Salvation Army churches in Basildon, Colchester and Harlow. After appealing to customers to support The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeals in the county, Barclays UK staff delivered 460 toys to the churches whose leaders and volunteers distributed to them to families which children who would otherwise go without during the festive period. Major Timothy Justice, our church leader in Basildon said he is incredibly grateful for Barclays’ support. He received 120 gifts to pass on to children in families who have been referred by different agencies. “The donation from Barclays has made a massive difference,” he says, “The agencies who have collected toys so far to distribute to local families have been really grateful. A huge thank you to Barclays staff.” Learn more: https://brnw.ch/21wPPXd

Christmas and holiday greetings! 🎄 The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, American Red Cross, United Way, Goodwill Industries International, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Feed the Children, Toys For Tots, Operation Smile, Star of Hope Mission, the National Association of State Treasurers and @National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators offices owe your organizations, and many others, millions in unclaimed property in cash and other assets. Someone with children who could use free clothing, has entered the chat: While it's commendable that 18,000 children received a season of clothing, it's equally disheartening that so many are in need—and surely, another 18,000 children could use similar assistance. I've said it before: parents need livable wages, hours that allow them to care for and build relationships with their children, and safe neighborhoods. In the words of Al Bundy, “You can’t have one without the other!” The crime in our community is directly linked to poverty, which stems from a lack of advancement and opportunity for marginalized individuals. This cycle repeats as parents are overworked, underpaid, and stressed in a constant struggle for survival. We need career opportunities as holiday charity. Instead of toy trucks, we need career opportunities for Giving Tuesdays, rather than endless roundtable discussions about recurring problems. A career is the gift that keeps on giving. A promotion that recognizes those of us who have invested time in acquiring new skills and have spent years developing transferable skills can make a world of difference. For many families, ending poverty is just one job offer away.

While we will still be taking emergency applications for unhoused families, the Red Cross, CHOICES, etc. the Charity Newsies general assistance application is now closed. Three years and prior, we were able to keep the clothing assistance application open into December to serve up to 15,000 children. Two years ago, we reached our budgetary goal of 15,000 children right before Thanksgiving. Last year, we reached 15,000 on August 15 before Columbus City Schools even opened. We scrambled and raised money and bought clothes to reach 18,000, which we did on September 18. This year, we opened on July 29 planning to serve 18,000 children. As of 9:38 a.m. morning, August 15, 18 days since opening the application, we have hit our budgeted amount of 18,000 children scheduled to receive clothing or who have already picked up clothing.

This week, I met with leaders from two churches to discuss the Payment Card Interchange Fee class action. Churches and non-profits that receive tithes, offerings, and donations through credit cards can file a claim for their share of the $8.5 billion settlement. The deadline to submit a claim is February 4th. Our team is prepared for a surge of last-minute submissions, so don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Whether your claim amounts to four, five, or six figures, we are here to help you maximize your claim. If you processed Visa or Mastercard payments from January 1, 2004, to January 25, 2019, you should file a claim. We can assist you with the process. #pcif #classactionclaims #srhmarketplace #church #nonprofit

Contact is supporting a new petition calling for urgent reform of Carer’s Allowance to ensure it properly supports carers and puts an end to the devastating overpayments that many are facing. We are part of the Carer Poverty Coalition and have joined forces with other carer charities to get as many signatures as possible. We need to get to 10,000 signatures for the government to respond and 100,000 to get it debated in parliament. Carer’s Allowance overpayments continue to make headlines in the media. The government has released new data which shows they are attempting to claw back Carer’s Allowance overpayments from 156,000 unpaid carers, with around 11,600 of these carers involving carers with debts of over £5,000. Charitably inclined individuals should be aware of groups that are masquerading as charitable organizations to attract donations. The fraudsters use fake charities as cover to not only obtain money, but also gather sensitive personal and financial information that can be exploited for tax-related identity fraud. When taxpayers contribute to an organization, they may qualify for a tax deduction, but only if they itemize their deductions. To qualify for a deduction, the charity must be an IRS-recognized tax-exempt organization. Donors should check the IRS’s Tax Exempt Organization Search online tool to ensure the legitimacy of a charity. For more details: https://bit.ly/3PVQwWh #FakeCharities #TaxFraud #IdentityTheft
