Summer camps offered by The Salvation Army across the country serve as an affordable solution. The Salvation Army’s Pine Lake Camp, located near Red Deer, Alta., offers a variety of camps that take place throughout the summer. “The aim is to give children an opportunity to come to camp and have a safe and positive environment where they get healthy food, lots of different programs and physical activity,” says Major Sheldon Bungay, divisional children and youth secretary for the Prairies and Northern Territories Division. https://bit.ly/3W8lb6j

🏊♀️Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 AND it is preventable. Children who receive swim lessons are 88% less likely to drown. This week I learned more from the people and organizations leading the state in water safety (including the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, The Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation, and The Greater Waterbury YMCA) about the impact of swim lessons in preventing drownings. It’s inspiring to see these #Connecticut partners come together to raise awareness on such a critical issue. 📊In underserved communities, 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have no or low swimming ability. Drowning death rates for Black children ages 10-14 are over 7 times higher than White children. Additionally, 64% of Black, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children cannot swim. 🚫💲Free swim lessons for children can make a significant difference in preventing tragedies. Programs across Connecticut have provided nearly 5,000 lessons to over 4,000 children, aiming to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn this life-saving skill. Essential Water Safety Tips: 🔵 Always watch your children. Drowning is quick and silent. Stay within arm’s reach. 🔵 Drink responsibly. Swim sober. 🔵 Swim in designated areas and always with a buddy. 🔵 Know your limits and be aware of underwater hazards. 🔵 Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for children and inexperienced swimmers. Get involved, learn more, and ensure that EVERY child can safely enjoy the water this summer. Stay safe and make a splash responsibly! #WaterSafety #SwimLessons #SafeSwimming #EquityInSafety #DEI

Saving the train is about more than just preserving a mode of transportation – it’s about preserving our community’s lifeline. Conservancy Archives volunteer Kitty Kaar has attended recent Save the Train rallies, and here are some of her reasons why. 1️⃣ We need MORE public transit, not less. Accessible transportation is crucial for students, workers, and our environment. It’s what brought my family here and keeps us active in our community. 2️⃣ Losing the trains would devastate our local economy. Our neighborhood was built on their existence and thrives because of it. 3️⃣ The Chestnut Hill East and West lines are part of our identity. They define our neighborhood’s rich history, and losing them would be like losing a piece of ourselves. As our commitment to advocating for our community continues, follow #SEPTASaturday posts. These posts will underscore the critical importance of public transit – vital to our neighborhood and a sustainable means of transportation that provides accessibility. PA Government recently drafted a budget that would have left SEPTA facing a daunting $240 million shortfall starting July 1. This shortfall could result in severe cuts to bus and rail services, with the Chestnut Hill West Regional Rail line particularly vulnerable and the Chestnut Hill East line and bus services also at risk. ABOUT CAMPING... I love adventures that is why I'm always excited to join any camp program organized by my church. Camp programs gives me the opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, travel to new places and ultimately getaway with God. Having been to many camps as a child, teenager and now a youth I'll say that camp programs are worth attending. Tomorrow the youths of Assemblies of God Nigeria will be on their way to Evangel Camp Okpoto in Ebonyi State for our national youth convention. I feel so excited about it already and I know that it's going to be a great time. If you're going, you might want to write everything you need and check them so that you don't miss anything and become inconvenienced in camp. Although there are places where you can buy things but you can save yourself some unnecessary expenses if you plan well. I've created a little checklist that you can share with someone that is attending any camp: ✅ Bible, jotter, pen ✅ Toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, antiseptic, tissue, towel, sanitary towels for ladies just in case. ✅ Clothes, underwears, socks in case of cold, sweaters, night wears, big bedspread or duvet if you have space ✅ Beverages, biscuits and bread if you like bread like me 😀 ✅Bucket, foldable mats or beds ✅ Charge your phones and power banks very well ✅Money, more money and plenty money because you may see things like books, stationers that you'd like to purchase or even for your offerings and feeding. What else should a camper add to these list above? I pray for journey mercies to and fro and wish all campers a refreshing time in God's presence. PS: while in camp, remain focused, spiritual and protect your personal belongings. Everyone came with a mission even though it's a church program. #AssembliesOfGod #youthconvention #blessingmgbeonyere #blissfullnotes #campinglife #retreats

OUT OF SIGHT, BUT NOT OUT OF MIND: CHILD DROWNING IN RURAL AREAS OF VIETNAM In Vietnam, the death rate from drowning is very high, especially in rural areas, which is 4 TIMES HIGHER than in urban areas. Drowning mainly occurs in the community, accounting for 77.6% (ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, lakes, seas, falls into manholes, construction lakes, 15.8% occurs at home and 6,6% elsewhere). Drowning occurs mainly during the months when students are on summer vacation. Many cases of child drowning occur due to the lack of knowledge and supervision of adults. Also, the children themselves lack safety skills, and many of them do not know how to swim. Over 50% of drowning cases occur outdoors when children play in a water environment without an adult. Also, urbanization has caused the water system to be polluted, with no place to practice swimming for rural children, while the artificial swimming pool system for children has received little or no investment. To prevent rural children from drowning, according to experts, it is necessary to prioritise children with frequent exposure to open water environments and high risk of natural disaster by providing survival swimming lessons and water safety education; raising people's awareness on child drowning and enhancing adults’ supervision. Local authorities should take action by building fences, barriers around ponds and lakes to make sure the children have a safe play area. The fact that many organizations actively build artificial swimming pools in rural areas is a reasonable form because this will create a safe environment for children to learn swimming. Below is one of the tragic child deaths of drowning in the countryside of Vietnam. While herding cows, a student in Quang Tri tragically drowned: https://lnkd.in/gVAPGDQb Visit us for more information related to drowning prevention on our website: huehelp.org #swimmingforsafety #StopDrowning #drowningprevention

Alert: Phoenix has enacted a new law now in effect, camping is prohibited within 500 feet of schools, shelters, daycares, or parks. This measure aims to address safety and public health concerns, ensuring that the spaces most frequented by vulnerable populations, especially children, remain safe and accessible. Violations of this ordinance carry significant consequences, including a $100 fine and a misdemeanor booking. The implementation of this law reflects ongoing efforts to manage public spaces while balancing the needs of the community, including those who find themselves without stable housing. At A New Leaf, while we understand the intent behind such regulations, we also recognize the challenges they pose to our homeless community members. We remain committed to advocating for compassionate solutions that support all individuals affected by homelessness, providing them with the resources and assistance they need to secure stable and safe accommodations. We encourage community members to stay informed about these new regulations and to join us in supporting initiatives that offer real solutions and support for those in need. Together, we can work towards a community that upholds safety and dignity for everyone. https://lnkd.in/grmFTyre

Lady Liberty looks pretty good for her age, but the 200-year-old fort that serves as her base has seen better days. The cold and windy conditions in New York Harbor, combined with storms and sea water, are tough on structures, and Fort Wood is no exception. Currently, about 50,000 highly visible square feet of walking surface at the fort are in disrepair, meaning the site can't provide adequate accessibility for visitors. An investment from the Great American Outdoors Act will change that and make the site safer for its 3 million annual visitors. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. Join NPCA in urging Congress to keep investing in our national parks and extend GAOA by at least five more years! https://lnkd.in/ej6auypb #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #ProtectOurParks #ParkFunding #LadyLiberty #StatueOfLiberty #NewYork
