🚴♀️ What is fat biking? We’ve recently been discussing fat biking in Antarctica with James Benson-King aka, the Biking Viking, who you can hear on the podcast linked in the comments talking about his ambitions for the South Pole. But what is fat biking? It is a unique form of cycling that uses specially designed bikes with oversized, wide tyres built to handle extreme terrain – think sand, rugged landscapes, and importantly snow. These bikes provide excellent traction, making them perfect for adventures where regular mountain bikes can’t go – such as Antarctica. But did you know that very few adventurers have taken fat bikes to the ultimate challenge – the South Pole? Riding through the icy, harsh conditions of Antarctica on a fat bike is an incredible test of endurance, strength, resilience, and patience. Only a handful of people, such as Daniel Burton in 2014 or Omar Di Felice’s impressive showing last season have taken on this epic feat, pushing the boundaries of human adventure and cycling in the most extreme places on Earth. It was great to have been at The Emergency Services Show yesterday at the NEC - National Exhibition Centre! I had a lengthy and productive follow-up with Rob Simpson from Cheshire Police (Cheshire Constabulary), as well as Amanda Farrell and Steve Jones. BA (Hons) FHEA from Liverpool John Moores University to reflect on Exercise Winter Storm 2024. Our discussions focused on how Jådåt Operations can assist in enhancing the preparedness of emergency services for extreme cold weather events in the future. By leveraging our expertise in cold weather competency training, specialist extreme conditions R&D facilitation, and operational experience, we aim to help frontline teams better navigate the challenges posed by severe weather conditions and improve their overall resilience in the face of extreme environments. I also took the opportunity to catch up with the Antarctic Fire Angels, who I haven't seen since before Antarctica. Their presentation on stage was hugely insightful and it's always interesting to hear other peoples' perspectives on their expedition. We also had a natter about their next challenge, the Great World Race, which isn't far away now... Beyond having a good old chin wag with some friends, stroking service dogs, and being surrounded by such passionate and dedicated individuals, I was there to connect with organisations that require assistance in Cold Weather Competence Training, R&D facilitation, and winter environment consultancy for planning and training. Now that summer is officially behind us, it’s time to look forward to everyone’s favourite season – winter! At Jådåt Adventure, we’re gearing up for an exciting season filled with unique opportunities to explore and conquer the cold. The final touches are now being applied before we kick the season off with the SSAFA the Armed Forces charity Project Fire & Ice team in early January. Since becoming focused and invested in the extreme cold-weather world a few years ago I’ve found that determination and commitment are the backbone of any polar expedition – and the same applies when starting a business. From the moment the idea of Jådåt Adventure took hold, these two qualities have driven every step of the journey. Conceiving an idea for an expedition isn’t just about dreaming big; it’s about committing to the research, understanding the topography, and mastering the equipment and skills needed to survive and thrive in the cold. Expedition Announcement! 📢❄️ Jådåt Adventure is proud to announce our support for an extraordinary expedition that is set to take place in the heart of Siberia during the dead of winter, beginning in November 2025. Daniel Eggington is travelling the length of the Lena River in Siberia. It’s a journey that will push his limits of endurance as he faces some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. His mission? To uncover the raw beauty and untamed wilderness of Siberia while testing his resilience against nature’s harshest environments. Daniel will be on our expedition training pipeline before Toby Cowern takes him through a bespoke specialist training package aimed at providing him with the knowledge he needs to endure the Siberian winter. He'll conclude his training in the remote Northern Swedish wilderness on a confirmatory expedition putting all the training into practice before he heads to Siberia in November 2025.
