An early updated version of Sir Edward Belcher’s seminal 1813 nautical chart of Hong Kong. One of the most significant and important duties all British and other nations’ Naval Officers had under training, especially as ‘snotties’ at least up until WW1, was in the visual arts, not only of using artforms picturing coastal, tidal and other forms of mapping and chartwork, but also in actually drawing accurate pictorial representations of coastlines, shoals, reefs etc. In combination with taking rudimentary depth measurements and so on, the accuracy and attention to detail were invaluable to navigation especially in locating and identifying maritime hazards and their management. Just one important facet of Naval expertise often overlooked in history. Source in picture below.

On this day in history, 19 December 1941, the US Naval Academy Class of 1942 graduates ahead of schedule. Their original graduation date of February 1942 was moved up due to the United States’ entry into WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The US Naval Academy had been on a wartime schedule since the summer of 1940 in response to Germany’s attack on France. It also accelerated its courses to condense their material into a 3-year program, and began allowing 5 appointees for each Congress member instead of four. All of these changes contributed to the dramatic increase in the numbers of United States Navy servicemen over the course of WWII. Image of the US Naval Academy from the 1930s. On this day in history, 9 October 1942, Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, OK becomes the first school for enlisted WAVES. The WAVES—Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service—were established by Public Law 689 in July 1942 as a Women’s Reserve to the U.S. Navy. Although Oklahoma A&M—now Oklahoma State University—was the first school for enlisted WAVES, many schools across the country participated in the education and training programs. These schools often received ship nicknames, such as Hunter College’s “USS Hunter” after it became the WAVES’ primary Naval Training Station. The WAVES did not serve on ships and were not permitted postings outside the continental United States until the very end of the war, but over 10,000 women served in the Navy various capacities. The Women’s Reserve was dissolved in 1946 as per the original agreement when the WAVES were established, but in 1948, the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act enabled women to join the Navy and Naval Reserve once again.
