My latest piece argues that Egypt is struggling to navigate this new multipolar world partly due to its struggling economy. This provides an opportunity for the US to help the Egyptian people by assisting in ways that ensure aid goes to average Egyptians, rather than Egypt's military. This is especially important in this multipolar world when aid can now be received from other countries such as China. A new study involving native speakers of Arabic and native speakers of German shows that the areas of the brain where a language is processed, as well as the connections between these areas, vary according to the respective native language. In Arabic, it's very common to have words based on triliteral roots with only slight differences leading to different meanings, e.g. k-t-b ( ب - ت - ك), can mean kitab (كتاب) or katib (كاتب), "book" or "writer". So, a native speaker of Arabic has to infer the specific word meaning and pronunciation from the context. A native German speaker, on the other hand, has to focus on sentence structure, as the language has a flexible word order and some verbs can be split, with elements of the verb being positioned separately within the sentence, which involves other parts of the brain. These fundamental differences between a root-based language like Arabic and a language with complex syntax like German lead to different connections between different parts of the brain. These findings could revolutionise the treatment of stroke patients (different therapy approaches could be developed for speakers of different languages). It also serves to prove that ranking languages as "easy" or "difficult" is highly culture-specific.
