I was having a think today about Edtech and edtech companies and how they stand out. You can have a Ferrari of a product, but like any good ferrari, you need to have a driver for it to go it's full potential. So what can you as an edtech company do to ensure that your product is actually a fit? 1. Test with Educators 2. Iterate based on said feedback. 3. Build community. MHub: Won a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration in 2016 to help build their facility, support education programs, and acquire advanced prototyping equipment. They later won another $1.3 million grant in 2020 to scale their services. [2] ProtonMail: Won €2 million in grant funding in 2019 from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program, which they used to enhance their global competitiveness and expand their product offerings. [2] Talkspace : Awarded close to $7 million in grant funding in 2021, including $4 million from the NIH's National Institute of Mental Health and a $3 million NIH R01 grant, to examine their tele-mental health services. 📚💻Edtech Funding Landscape📈 According to the information, the U.S. federal government allocated $6.8 trillion toward grants and fixed charges in 2020, indicating there is a significant amount of funding available for innovative edtech initiatives. In addition to government grants, there are also many foundation and private organizations that offer funding for edtech companies, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and various venture capital firms like NewSchools Venture Fund and Kapor Capital. To end the day with a bang, I would like to post about a startup in our portfolio that is close to my heart: 📲 NeXtGen - Social EdTech revolutionizes learning by merging the benefits of social media with structured education. The platform for both teenagers, young adults and educators uses gamified challenges and community-driven content to engage learners, while GenAI personalizes their learning paths. ❓ ❗ Why is this important: Because we need a new way of learning. Traditional education often fails to engage students and adapt to individual learning styles, making it feel burdensome and ineffective. This results in a disconnect between what is taught and real-world applications, leaving learners unprepared for future challenges. With a balanced approach that addresses both market demands and social impact, EdTech startups have the potential to not only succeed commercially but also to contribute to the greater educational narrative of the region. EdTech pioneers left the session equipped with a nuanced understanding of Latin America's educational challenges and inspired by the vast opportunities to create impactful solutions. The bootcamp didn't just focus on market analysis; it offered actionable insights. It stressed the importance of understanding local education policies, building solutions that are scalable and adaptable, and the critical need for engaging content that resonates with the Latin American context. The collaborative spirit of Latin America, with its strong community bonds, was identified as a key asset. Successful launch of the recently created Inter-American Association of Edtechs (IAAE)

Last week, I had an amazing conversation on community-driven learning with Oneday These guys are going to change education and the world by bringing a unique way of learning how to set up and run your own business. Taras Polik This is what I have seen work for ed-tech startups that use the power of collective learning as part of their community-driven model: 1. They engage early supporters who are excited about their mission to help them shape the experience. Sounds easy, but it is not. Patience, strategy, and the right approach for that unique context are key. 2. They set up the right spaces. For example, they create online spaces where educators and learners can connect and share useful resources. Intention and design are everything. 3. They nail peer-to-peer learning so community members can help each other grow. Very few things grow organically, so having a community architect to engineer connections and sharing AND who is knowledgeable about collaborative pedagogies will prove to be a great ROI. 4. They give recognition by thanking and rewarding active community members to keep them engaged and feeling valued. 5. They know the difference between events and community. Having a string of seemingly connected events is NOT community. People can show up but still feel like they don't belong. They consider their psychological needs, too.
