ConcePTION’s goal is to give women the opportunity to take informed decisions about their health and treatment also during the vulnerable periods of pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is hard, because these women are often excluded from clinical trials to protect their babies. And to be able to offer sound advice, a lot of data is needed. To be able to explore the safety of medicines during breastfeeding at a scale that provides enough data to fill the knowledge gap, animal models and in vitro studies are necessary. A recent publication outlines why isolated epithelial cells from Göttingen Minipigs are a good fit to create an in vitro model to study the blood milk barrier. How can #DrugUtilisation studies help to close knowledge gaps about #MedicationSafety in pregnancy? 🤔Learn more in this recent IMI ConcePTION publication. How BBMRI-ERIC is contributing to the Conception project 👉https://lnkd.in/dw_NnUnD
Drug utilisation studies are used to explore the medical, social and economic effects of the marketing, distribution, prescription and use of a medicine in society. Unlike clinical trials, these studies are performed after a treatment has already been brought to market. In the case of medicine safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding, drug utilisation studies play an important role in filling the knowledge gap, providing a firm foundation for safety studies by contextualising spontaneous reporting of serious adverse events. In a paper recently published in Journal of Pregnancy, the authors outline how these studies should be designed to be useful for this purpose.
