Product First is really Customer First, Product Last Product Management is going through a seismic shift right now as tech companies lay off thousands of roles in a bid to reduce burn or switch to a more profitable model. At the same time, the boundaries between Product Management and teams like Product Design, Engineers and Marketing are blurring. 🤔 Why can’t Product Design define the roadmap? They know the customer the best. 🤔 Why can’t Engineering write requirements? They know the tech stack the best. And this is natural as teams get smaller and everyone fights for survival. But there are positives to this process. Specifically, it forces us to reassess where and what our USP is. 👉 Why are Product Managers important? 👉 What do Product do that other teams can’t do as successfully, or don’t have time for? ---- Shift From “Product First” to “Product Last” Today I read an article by Debbie Levitt, MBA with this title, where the premise is around how the fundamentals of Product-led or Product-first have really become convoluted and to a degree, misunderstood. To quote the article: "Over time, we’ve moved further and further away from focusing on product as how we deliver value to our customers. We fell so in love with product that we forgot that product doesn’t exist to push customers around a chessboard and make execs happy." It goes on to describe how if we think of it as customer-first (which it really should have been all along), then Product is actually the output. We are product _last_. Have a read of the full article below - a 10 minutes that’ll likely be well spent. https://lnkd.in/dDYz4iUF ---- 💙 Subscribe and get the latest #product content direct to your inbox: https://lnkd.in/djkRwtKz 💙 #productstrategy #productfirst #customerfirst
