CEO/ Founder of Midi Health, revolutionizing healthcare for women at midlife - to relieve their symptoms and support their wellbeing.
When I was a young venture investor and went on my first maternity leave, I was at Stanford Shopping Center drinking coffee with my mom and daughter and a very BIG name investor came by - an older man.
He walked over, smiled and said - it's nice to see you in your natural habitat - and walked away.
Note, we had collaborated together and worked in the same building. But he could only see me as a mom - and clearly my natural habitat was the shopping center.
Today almost my entire senior team and board consists of women - and our natural place is the boardroom!

The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. In a capitalist economy, prices allocate capital and labor between competing uses, and capital assets like factories, mines, and railroads can be privately owned and controlled.

For far too long, women and people of color in the United States have been forced to navigate systems that weren’t built with them in mind. This not only holds them back—it holds our entire country back from the progress we’re capable of.
I founded Pivotal Ventures in 2015 to get more power in the hands of more people, especially women, by removing the barriers that stand in their way. Ultimately, I want to see more women of all backgrounds in positions where they can make decisions, control resources, and shape policies and perspectives in every sector of society. They belong there, and we need them there.

⁉ How can we accelerate change so we don’t have to wait 208 years?
As Melinda French Gates shares in the message below, the harsh truth is that women in the U.S. are still 208 years away from achieving equality despite being the highest-income nation in the world. She founded Pivotal Ventures to accelerate the change.
🤲 We are experiencing a transformative and complex period characterized by shifting power dynamics and increased recognition and urgency for gender equity while structures remain unsupportive. This evolution is similar to any transitional era where churning is intense just before butter is about to appear. Even though we may see things, people, and situations differently, we all are undeniably caught in a fierce churning phase.
💪 I am Brown. I am a Woman. I am an Immigrant. I am Strong. Bias is as real as the grit and resilience that fuel my journey. As a first-generation American woman with Punjabi roots, I've encountered biases at every turn—professionally and personally. Whether you're a high-profile politician like Kamala Harris, an executive, or a hardworking service worker, bias walks with you like a shadow. I stand as one among millions committed to dismantling these barriers and fueling collective energies toward a future that's not just tolerant but actively equitable.
🌐 In a World Increasingly Defined By Crises, We Need Women’s Leadership Like Never Before! Ms. Magazine.
https://lnkd.in/dDM2cH99
Women’s direction, vision, and voice must be included at all levels of leadership. This inclusion and gender-sensitive responses must go beyond tokenism to represent and include broad coalitions of women from various backgrounds and at all levels.
👊 We all have a role!
Yes, it is a challenge, but it is also an opportunity for all of us—women, people of color, philanthropists, elected leaders, and nonprofit champions—to come together. We have been hearing so much about women of color leaving or being pushed out of leadership roles. It is an opportunity to create more success stories and be part of that story. Our collective effort is crucial. Achieving equality is a marathon and a relay race, not a sprint, requiring resilience and perseverance.
Collaboration and consistent effort are essential in shortening the 208-year timeline for gender equity. Every small action counts. Each strategy, whether big or small, has the potential to shift power dynamics. Every dollar invested and every supportive action—whether as a family member, friend, colleague, or someone in a position of power—carries weight. 💡 Potential=Inspiration

I think part of the issue in the western world is that we have made huge steps in tackling what was visible in terms of discrimination, whilst now we need to change the way we are wired culturally and unpack the bias.
We are all biased, it’s how our brain works, heuristics based thinking which represents cognitive shortcuts to jump to conclusions quicker. The fallacy in this case is that these shortcuts are based on ingrained assumptions re gender and race - find out about your biases (I find this test very solid and thought provoking https://lnkd.in/dgcCyVei ) and proactively challenge yourself at every choice or judgement - chances are the bias is there.
To accelerate the next steps towards a more equitable society for women and ethnic minorities, we need to re-wire the way we think because the problem we are trying to address is not in the surface, it manifests itself too late. It’s not anymore about the rules or the system by design like it was eg 50 years ago, the discrimination is hidden in the choices we make every day and the judgements that drive our behaviours. It is there though, hence why we are 200+ away.

How to divide equity among 3 co-founders?
Real life story.
Building a company has nothing to do with friendship.
Talked with a founder and here’s HOW they did it.
Total equity in a company 100%.
They set aside 19% for early employees and investors.
81% is left.
They did 2 things:
Number 1️⃣: EQUAL SHARES
Why is this smart move?
You avoid any kind of future envy.
Motivation to work hard is shared.
Its a long term decision.
1 of co-founders will:
- work the most
- have better connections
- come up with an idea
And they are aware of it.
But they just divided it in 3 equal parts.
27% each.
However, no-one gets all 27% upfront.
Number 2️⃣: VESTING
Each co-founder receives 6.75% at the end of every year.
Why is this intelligent move?
They think about what could go wrong.
Someone might:
- Burn out and give up
- Change life priorities
In the end, vesting keeps them all accountable.
Co-founder or NOT.
Equity has to be earned, not given.
Remove emotions aside and do the right split.
It keeps everyone at peace.
And you can build for the long term.
I hear from founders all the time that they're working so hard in the business that they don't work on the business. This is a big problem.
But, maybe an even bigger problem, is when is the last time they've worked on yourself? Founders need to take the time to rejuvenate and connect with other founders. That's what Emerging Prairie's first ever Summer Founder's Retreat is designed around.

Super, super, SUPER proud to be a part of this incredible venture, alongside these immensely talented people at Invest with Roots. It is genuinely humbling to be welcomed as wholeheartedly as Roots gas welcomed the R&Y team and culture. To think we were making jokes about this reality less than a year ago!
On a personal note: this entire experience since joining R&Y Labs and dipping my toes into project management has been something I didn't think I'd ever actually find for myself. I feel like I've really found my niche, and with this merge into Roots I know I'm working with people who really do give a damn about the lives they impact.
More importantly, I'm treated like a peer by people who I have looked up to in the Atlanta tech community for YEARS. Calvin used to DM me tips and tricks while I was struggling to figure out what an API was at Iron Yard 8 years ago. I knew who Randy was ever since someone asked me if I was related to him at my first Ruby meetup (we have very similar facial hair). They aren't just folks who do a good job: they are true mentors and teachers that fully embrace the idea of building people up.
I'm excited to try on yet another new hat in this wild tech journey as I take on more of an Agile Coach/Scrum Master role and help manage two separate dev teams at once.
And as Sam said, there's room for more folks on this awesome ride. Holler at me if you're looking for a new engineering opportunity!

At the end of 2023 I promised big things were in store for our team in 2024…
I am beyond excited to share that this year we will be launching Bloom! Bloom is the evolution of all the incredible work and impact that has been created by Invest with Roots.
Bloom will allow us to take the first ever “Own while you rent” program to tens of thousands more residents and allow property owners across the country to capture the same benefits that has seen the Roots fund grow over 42% since our inception in July of 21’.
We also are officially welcoming Randy Etheredge, Calvin Yu and the R&Y labs team to the Roots/Bloom family.
The BEST part is there is room for more people to join us on this mission to reinvent what it means to rent in America. We are currently looking to assemble a squad of the top engineers and tech leaders focused on creating real impact to join us and help drive our mission of helping a million people build wealth. If this sounds like you or someone you know hit me up!!!!
