For those who feel they ought to know more about China, I highly recommend the Economist's excellent podcast Drum Tower. This week's episode "Tick tock for TikTok" presents China's side of the TikTok debate (a viewpoint that I feel is undercovered in Western media). Stepping back from all the hype and politicisation, does Chinese ownership of TikTok really pose a threat to America? #tiktok #china #dataprotection #socialmedia https://lnkd.in/eyqQriDz

Well worth a listen on economic developments in China and what the key catalysts could be for the China markets to come out of their recent tailspin.
At the end of January 2024, CIO Moz Afzal and Chief Economist Stefan Gerlach attended a series of meetings with public and private sector stakeholders in Asia. Top of mind was the strength of the Chinese economy, its housing market and what the future may hold for the largest market in Asia. Deliberating a New Modus Vivendi with China India-China relations are dynamic, featuring periods of marked conflict, competition, and some cooperation. Structurally, however, the relations face significant challenges today, in domains ranging from the boundary dispute and trade imbalance, to broader tensions surrounding leadership of the 'Global South', burgeoning US-China contestation, and competing visions for a regional order. And even though the structural faultlines cannot be wished away, they require a crisp and innovative means to think about achieving equilibrium and some stability. In this episode of All Things Policy, Manoj Kewalramani speaks to Anushka Saxena (She/Her) about a pathway towards achieving a new modus vivendi with China. He sheds light on the influential strands of thought shaping the two neighbours' policies toward each other, while also proposing a 6-part framework for India to consider as it approaches the 'China question'. Manoj's detailed ideas are also elaborated in his latest research paper for Takshashila, entitled 'Contours of a New Modus Vivendi with China'. Is EU good for Europe? The EU, a unique economic giant, acts similarly to the US federal government, hinting at a "United States of Europe" with its shared currency, policies, and trade deals among 27 states. Despite its near-federal structure, it lacks some federation benefits, posing issues for its members. With a $20 trillion output, second only to the USA, it wields significant global influence. However, its major economies face stagnant growth, mirroring challenges for smaller members. #EU

🎧New wee, new podcast! In the latest episode of the World in 30 Minutes, Mark Leonard welcomes his fellow authors – policy fellow Alicja Bachulska, and ECFR Asia programme director and senior policy fellow, Janka Oertel– to discuss the book’s themes: power, progress, and people. How is the global order shifting vis-à-vis China and US competition? In what ways are Chinese thinkers writing and defining progress, and how does this differ from Western conceptions of progress? And what do these thinkers have to say on the demographic future of China? https://lnkd.in/duiXC3hG
