So when someone asks you to include disabled people and accessibility, responding that you are being attacked may not be the flex you think it is. p.s. If you're a business in the US, you may REALLY want to rethink how you respond to requests to be inclusive of disability and not force disabled people to explain to you why they need access. p.p.s. Using ephemisms about explaining a person's "special needs" is also not heading toward equity and human rights. There's nothing special about equitable access. p.p.p.s. Forcing (we ask nicely)disabled people to disclose or prove their specific disability is also not heading toward equity and human rights.

You’ve undoubtedly read, heard, seen people in accessibility and disability inclusion talk about the danger of overlays/plugins/little human shape in a circle to “turn on” accessibility. Thanks to Joe Devon for his post and sharing today. This one is for the tech world at large (any front end devs who use CSS will recognize Chris Coyier and his work in CodePen and CSS Tricks) .... and EVERYONE else that's not a techie type! How did I not know that Chris Coyier weighed in on accessibility overlays? He's exactly right. The problem with overlay companies is the business model. If you are trying to make websites work best for People with Disabilities (PwD), your mission is to fix inaccessible websites for PwD. You are aligned with the end user. If you are trying to sell to businesses who are getting sued, you will make more money, but your mission (beyond making money) is to avoid accessibility lawsuits and you are NOT aligned with the person who has a disability. ATL folks in urban development and digital inclusion. A young woman who is working with American Connect Corps reached out to me today they are looking for a way to finish their program. Americorps pays their salary, but they need an organization to work with. The American Connection Corps (ACC) is an AmeriCorps program that leverages the power of national service to expand people’s economic opportunities, bridge their social network, and open them up to different perspectives. Their original placement was too far for them to travel and well outside the metro area. They are looking for Fulton County based organizations. Anyone?
