Promoting cohesion among team members is essential for effective collaboration and goal achievement. Team cohesiveness refers to the ability of a team to work together harmoniously toward a common objective. It involves fostering trust, open communication, and shared commitment. When teams exhibit strong cohesiveness, several benefits emerge, including better communication, efficient goal fulfillment, reduced need for micromanagement, a positive work environment, and increased job satisfaction. To enhance team cohesion, consider practices such as encouraging communication, structuring clear goals, providing training, celebrating successes together, and empowering team members. Remember, a united team is more than the sum of its individual parts!

One of the key components of team harmony is trust. When team members trust each other, they feel comfortable expressing their ideas, opinions, and concerns openly. They believe that their contributions are valued and respected by their peers, which fosters a sense of belonging and psychological safety within the team. Trust also enables constructive conflict resolution, as team members can address disagreements or challenges without fear of judgment or reprisal.

Being fully accepting does not equal full permission.   I was talking with a close friend who was struggling with internal team dynamics.   The good: Feeling accepted by team members can reduce anxiety and improve overall wellbeing.   It's also an integral part of building a trusting team.   The real: Being accepting does not equal permission to do as one pleases.   The practical: We talked about practical ways to build trust: - Draw boundaries (together if you can) - Set clear expectations - Create accountability with consequences (positive and negative)   Sometimes a simple miscommunication or a lack of guidance can compound difficulties on a fragile team.   What has been useful for you when building a trusting team?

Learn to see Last week I got the chance to take the team through a mapping exercise to 'see'. It was two hours of time, pulling apart a specific process that was causing continuous frustration for key team members. This type of work isn't sexy, it isn't supposed to be. It is all about putting time aside to understand each others role to make a key task work easier and flow better. This particular session had the same results as similar activities I have facilitated before: - Awareness across the team what 'good' looks like - Appreciation of how each action can influence tasks further down the process. - Changing a few responsibilities around team members can make a big difference. - The conversations between team members is the most important aspect.

Success in any area requires checking egos and committing to the greater good. Think about the language of your culture: is it group or individually-focused? Is it “We” or “I”? Building a cohesive team can’t be done at 35,000 feet or as a drive-by. It takes engagement and effort from the ground floor to the corner office.

Celebrating successes, both big and small, reinforces the team's purpose and achievements. Promoting breaks and respecting individual boundaries helps maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life.
