Grace was teaching in Rarotonga when she began to feel unwell. She flew back to New Zealand right before the border closed during the pandemic. Not long after, she began to have seizures and was put into an induced coma. She was later diagnosed with Listeria Encephalitis. Four years on, rehab is her full-time job. By sharing her story, she hopes to educate others about disability and the daily challenge it represents. Read Grace's story: https://loom.ly/92sPkdU #SameYouPortrait #SameYouCharity

Today is #LGSAwarenessDay! LGS is a form of developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) that typically develops in childhood and results in frequent and difficult-to-treat seizures. People living with LGS experience a variety of complications, including frequent and severe seizures, significant behavioral and developmental delays, movement and balance issues, and sleep difficulties. Even more devastating, they are 24 times more likely to die of premature mortality, including sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). On #LGSAwarenessDay, let’s show our support, advocate for more research, and work toward better treatment options and resources for those impacted. By increasing awareness, we can foster a more understanding and inclusive community for LGS patients and their caregivers. #epilepsy #teamucb
Ahead of #LGSAwarenessDay, discover Dr. Tracy Dixon-Salazar’s journey as a carer for her daughter Savannah and how UCB is supporting the Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) Foundation to drive change for the LGS community and those living with #epilepsy. https://lnkd.in/eaHEwqgM

"Assume I can do it". Being underestimated and people assuming all the things we as disabled people cannot do is one of the biggest barriers to disability inclusion. Something I hear again and again in my research and advocacy work. This video made for World Downs Syndrome day 2024 (today) sums that up amazingly well. Because I'm blind people have assumed: - I can't cook. - I got my PhD before I lost my sight. - I will not be able to finish High School - I need feeding as I would be unable to find my own mouth... - I would be a liability as I would break displays and computers in my wake by bumping and smashing into them. - ... https://lnkd.in/eZhF9dd3 #disability #disabilityinclusion #edi #inclusion #employment #advocacy

🙌 Expanding employment opportunities for people with Down syndrome This video describes the employment experience of Aidar Shamkeev, who has Down syndrome, as a kitchen assistant in one of the coffee shops in Bishkek. 📣 Based on the experience of working with Aidar, the management of the "Clever Bishkek" coffee shop recommends three conditions for the employment of people with intellectual disabilities: to promote greater independence of the employee, to use simple and clear language in communication with him, and to use visual cues that help to successfully cope with tasks ✅ 💙 Aidar notes that employment allows you not only to earn money, but also to communicate with others and feel part of society.
