“Form not Content Dictates the “Smart” City” by Dhiru A. Thadani. “Future neighborhoods and cities must be designed as if there is no or little external energy available, similar to the places that tourists continue to admire and visit. Places that are livable without excessive energy demands and where beauty prevails. Environments where the urban pattern encourages walking as the primary form of transportation to access human needs. Where civic life thrives and daily human interaction is serendipitous.” Read the article: https://lnkd.in/dJQFCzdF #urbanism #traditionalarchitecture #traditionalurbanism #urbandesign #urbanplanning #smartcity #citymaking #architecture

Our latest paper ‘Cross examination of smart urbanism and Southern urbanism: A systematic literature review in search of ‘Southern smart urbanism’’ is now published in Cities. (open access) This paper systematically reviews the literature on smart urbanism and Southern urbanism to conceptualise smart cities in the Global South. Through a two-stage analysis, the paper highlights the gaps in theorising Southern smart urbanism around three areas – visioning, development, and planning; infrastructure and services; and social and community. https://lnkd.in/gxGqjsHZ Tooran Alizadeh Architecture, Design and Planning - University of Sydney

Numerous European-built buildings in Asia, predicated on European-type plans, have distinct references to local architecture. Traditional styles continue today, particularly in housing estates adjacent to super-Modernist environments, such as high-rise suburbs in China. How can we reimagine urban living in the 21st century? 🏡 At BAU 2025, Professor Oliver Thill presented a thought-provoking lecture on four residential construction projects across Europe. Social housing on an old prison site in Amsterdam? A powerful example of how transforming existing urban spaces can create affordable, sustainable housing solutions. The lecture explored cost-optimized strategies beyond traditional standards while offering fresh perspectives on urban living quality in today’s world.💡 Here are our three key takeaways: 👉 Building economically starts with smart urban planning 👉 Simply raising standards does not always guarantee better quality – so we need to ask: who are we planning for and what does quality truly look like in that context? 👉 Actively shaping urban development with a cost-optimized strategy ensures that both demands and budget realities are effectively addressed. Were you at Forum The Future of Building and attended this lecture? Let us know what you found most interesting? 👇 #BAU #baumuenchen #innovation #architecture #constructionindustry

"What would happen for Australia if we actually tapped into the voices of the first peoples?" A descendant of the Dharawal and Yuin people, our keynote speaker Alison Page combines the ancient and contemporary when exploring the understanding of place. Our first speaker on the opening day (June 12) of our conference next week, her session will be a perspective shifting start to our gathering, and will be sure to put all attendees in an expansive frame of mind for the sessions and conversations that follow. "It’s an interesting idea for urban designers, landscape architects, architects to think about....what would happen if we tapped into the voices of indigenous people?" #placebrandingaustralia #placeidentity #firstnationsculture #culture #economicdevelopment #urbanplanning #architecture #communitydevelopment #placemaking

Throwback to a brilliant moment when I had the opportunity to witness Melbourne’s urban vibrancy, one of the world’s most liveable cities. City of Melbourne's journey towards liveability is built on its dedication to quality urban design, activating public spaces like laneway movements to transport networks. These efforts have created an environment that not only serves today’s residents but also ensures future generations have something to look forward to. In many respects, Singapore shares a similar vision. From our well-designed built environments to our efficient transport systems, both cities are committed to creating spaces that enhance quality of life. Much like Melbourne, Singapore’s forward-thinking urban planning ensures our city remains resilient, sustainable, and liveable for the future. If your city has demonstrated a commitment to improving urban spaces, fostering liveability, and delivering innovative design solutions, consider nominating it for the LKY World City Prize. It’s an opportunity to share best practices, showcase your city’s achievements, and inspire others globally. #UrbanDesign #CityPlanning #LiveableCities #Singapore #Melbourne #LKYWorldCityPrize #SustainableCities
Whether it is activating their popular laneways, or prioritising the creation of more well-designed buildings and environments and improving their transport networks, City of Melbourne’s continuous improvements to enhance the quality of their environments have made them one of the most #LiveableCities in the world. Hear from Sally Capp AO, former Lord Mayor of Melbourne (2024 Special Mention) on the impact of some of their initiatives, with the belief that investing in good design matters in creating “a significant impact today and for generations to come.” #LKYWCP #UrbanDesign #UrbanPlanning #Architecture

It is an incredible thrill to be invited to lecture at the IIT Architecture College https://arch.iit.edu/. Thanks to the contributions of Mies van der Rohe and Hilberseimer, Chicago is a shock city for my generation. My lecture, titled ‘Metropolitan Architecture Across Disciplines Boundaries: The Entangled Landscapes from Absent to Included Third,’ explores how landscape, often seen as an ‘excluded third,’ can become an integral part of a narrative that can promote agreement between peoples. Returning to Chicago means reflecting on the fundamental questions posed by this school, particularly regarding the regional dimension of the city and the multiple scales of urban phenomena. I question how new forms of landscape, networks, and architecture interface with the paradigmatic changes of contemporary cities and how Maria Villalobos' model of the “botanical city” can offer us tools to address the challenges of urbanisation. In this lecture, I will attempt to investigate the link between structures for greatness, image, and the metropolitan sustainable commons. It will be an opportunity to share ideas and reflections that I hope will contribute to a constructive dialogue about the future of our cities. #Architecture #Urbanism #MetropolitanArchitecture #IITChicago #DesignThinking

NEW RESEARCH - a fascinating report by the Sydney Pollinator Lab investigating a pollinator corridor for inner Sydney, Australia. This research was funded by an Alastair Swayn Foundation DESIGN STRATEGY Grant. Pollinators may reflect overall ecosystem health, and may also represent the canary in the coal mine of urban ecosystems. The unseen work they perform in wild places is shrouded even further by the built environment. This research seeks to make this work visible, celebrate it, and to facilitate its proliferation.
