In a world first, two Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35A fighter jets landed and took off from a public highway in Finland as part of a NATO exercise. This was done to demonstrate the ability to operate the F-35 from dispersed and austere locations, increasing survivability in conflict. While the F-35A is not capable of vertical take-off and landing like the F-35B, the exercise showed it can still operate from roads and highways, expanding the aircraft's basing options. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce
Wonder when we’ll close I-4 for similar exercises. 🇺🇸 is a NATO country too. If SFB, KDED, KISM, MCO, ORL etc. are under survellience or disabled, we can sneak 🛩️ up and down from the skies off of the Interstate! Naturally it won’t have all the usual guidance systems but a minimalist approach during war games is good!
F35 is very impressive and capable but very expensive and difficult to maintain. In WW2 Tiger Tanks were formidable machines ahead of their time. Also quite difficult to maintain. My question is .. In the same way, after D Day, US deployed Sherman tanks in multiples per Tiger and Russia built many more T34, to beat the best tanks is it not possible they a “swarm” of less expensive more conventional Su 24 - 30 would defeat the technically superior aircraft? I want one
Sir, in INDIA, Sukhoi 30 MKI aircraft landed at national highway in Rajasthan's Jalore on 9th Sept 2021. Landing a fighter jet on a road, is a routine exercise in INDIA.
While operating on dirty runways, some Russian aircrafts like MiG-29s and Su-27s, and their variants, have special doors to close off the intakes, instead directing the air through the ports over the top of the wing strakes. This is exactly preventing the engine from FOD during takeoff and landing.
1 (F) Squadron Harriers did this in the early 70’s so nothing new and we lived and slept under the aircraft on exercise in the woods in Scotland
copy cat :-) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bas_90 instead of F-35 craft, they should have bought 2x Saab Gripen for the same price
We all saw how leopards, abrams and other patriot failed their supremacy against mid-class Russian weapons. f-22 and f-35 are yet to show their actual capabilities in the fight with equal or supreme force. Something tells me than su-35 and s-400 will never let us see how "good" these modernised Soviet ЯК-141 are... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WybwlN_UCVI&pp=ygUI0K_QuiAxNDE%3D
If this is actually a “highway” why is there another aircraft sitting far back to the right and why are there runway lights along side the road? Just an observation

5moThis is not your average two lane road in Finland. Most do not have 20’ shoulders on the road as in the video. The wheel weight of an F35 would damage normal paved roads with standard asphalt, especially in summer. This area is a specially constructed highway section specifically designed for military aircraft use. This was done a number of roads in West Germany and Europe during the Cold War for the purpose of maintaining operations in the event air bases were disabled. You can see what looks like a Pilatus PC12 parked down off the “road” in the video too. It’s news over a year old. This is in Tervo Finland and on Google maps you can find the “road”, the 551 where this takes place.
