Have You Heard of Dragon Ties in Historic Buildings? When we think about historic buildings, we often admire their charm and beauty, but behind the scenes, there’s some incredible engineering that keeps them standing. One fascinating feature found in older timber-framed buildings is the dragon tie. So, what is a dragon tie? It’s a diagonal timber beam used in the corners of buildings, particularly in medieval and Tudor timber-framed houses. Its purpose is to support the structure where walls meet at right angles, helping to distribute the roof load and strengthen the frame. Think of it as an early (and elegant) form of reinforcement! Dragon ties allowed builders to achieve larger overhangs – those striking jettied upper floors that give historic buildings their iconic look. As we work to preserve these structures today, it’s a reminder of how traditional building techniques still inspire modern solutions. Does anyone know why they are referred to a dragon ties? I recently came across an interesting discussion on the Historic England page regarding 60s Brutalist buildings. Opinions in the comments section are divided. The topic has resonated with the architecture and construction community. Some perceive this style as ugly, while others view these buildings as beautiful.  It seems that many would support the demolition of Brutalist buildings.  What are your thoughts?  Do you believe Brutalist buildings from the last century are worth preserving? A SMALL THEORY.....building openings need a header (usually). Arches surpass the performance of a stone lintel or wood beam, pretty much all the time. Arches are elegant, they're rhythmic, and many times majestic, especially in concert with adjoining Arches, like here at the COLOSSEUM in Rome. However, the form of the arch, the Roman Arch to be specific is a building science by product of its strength and elegance. The Arch is a naturally formed "down and out". It has no level surfaces for water retention.
