With another great update from our #CivilEngine dev team, I'm able to advance my Urban Intersection example project even further! Intersection traffic controllers are now functional in our dev version, which means I can place intersecting traffic paths (pedestrian paths included!) and phase their stopping/starting actions. I'm even able to sync dynamic traffic signals to cycle green-yellow-red in time with the phasing. There are still some tweaks needed (too many red light runners!), but this is a huge advancement of Civil Engine - one that will be available in our Beta launch coming very soon. Let's talk about cycle tracks and roundabouts. . . If we are designing one-way off-carriageway cycle tracks with a roundabout, then the layout shown in the picture below might be suitable (alongside the parallel crossings). . . Of course, cyclists approaching the roundabout cycle area need to give way to cyclists in a circling motion. In order to achieve this, highway engineers need to leave adequate space between cyclist give way lines and pedestrian crossings. . . . The I-70 traffic corridor near Floyd Hill in Colorado is notorious for its heavy congestion and narrow lanes. Colorado DOT initiated a project to improve travel time reliability, enhance safety, and address the aging infrastructure along the eight-mile section of the mountain road. The project involves widening and redesigning the highway, replacing six old bridges, and upgrading interchanges and intersections along the route. Two wildlife crossings will be built under bridge spans to reconnect natural habitats that were disrupted by the road. AtkinsRéalis, tasked as the lead designer, faced site constraints and challenging topography while needing to minimize the impact on environmentally sensitive areas and existing roadways. To achieve this, they used Bentley solutions to create digital twins from the 3D models for better visibility. Working in a connected digital environment, the team could communicate design intent with stakeholders, integrate with the community, and update models quickly to avoid environmental and social impact. When finished, in addition to reducing traffic congestion and new wildlife passageways, it will also improve existing pedestrian and bike trails.
