🚀 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗥&𝗗 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁!🔋    Last week, we hosted the final meeting for our first-ever funded R&D project, marking a significant milestone in the development of next-generation batteries.    We were thrilled to welcome our esteemed project partners: Alantum Europe GmbH, Clean-Lasersysteme GmbH, Plasmatreat GmbH, Helmholtz-Institut Münster Forschungszentrum Jülich, and Fraunhofer IFAM Fraunhofer Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Angewandte Materialforschung.    The goal of this project was to develop a Li-ion cell demonstrator with a pre-lithiated alloy anode to promote the feasibility of manufacturing and the market application of innovative battery technologies. Over the past three years, we've achieved remarkable progress together by combining expertise from different fields, including the development of a full cell demonstrator based on an alloyed anode system. The event concluded with a visit to our GW-scale production site in Flintbek, showcasing our innovative processes. Leading this consortium has been an honor, and we eagerly anticipate future collaborations!    We thank our project partners for their dedication and contributions and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany for funding and support. The composites industry is still a small part of the global materials market, but steadily growing. At Exel Composites we see that there is still great potential and many new applications to be converted, and sustainability can be one of the key drivers to this growth. Lower weight panels for vehicles, composite materials needing less maintenance, energy efficient insulative profiles and much much more. Challenges ahead are still how to utilize and design the profiles, but help is on the way in form of design standards. If you attend the SAMPE (Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering) conference in California next week, make sure you don't miss the presentations by my friend and colleague Eric Moussiaux about emerging Eurocode standards and EuCIA view on sustainability.

🔋⚡♻ Another remarkable week for the battery industry during the Advanced Automotive Batteries Conference (AABC) held in San Diego, USA from 11-14 December. The event showcases a strong commitment from industry peers to tackle the challenges and support the market growth in this sector. Among the distinguished participants were the teams from BASF Battery Materials and Recycling, actively contributing to the discussions. On Tuesday, Mark Szendro, CEO of BASF TODA Battery Materials LLC and Director of BASF Battery Materials North America, held a presentation focused on the importance of a robust supply chain from mine to market to ensure the growth of electric vehicles (EVs) in North America. As the demand for EVs continues to grow, the importance of a reliable local supply chain has become clear to companies around the world. BASF has fully embraced this approach by strategically building a global network and establishing production facilities for cathode active materials in all key regions. Our new National President, Anthony Evans FICME sets out his thoughts on the industry and the Institute as he takes up the role from Martin Dudley FICME "Innovative supply chains are critical for our industry’s success - examples of foundries currently relocating their plants to countries closer to the West demonstrates that supply chains and component sourcing are a global challenge – and therefore an opportunity for our businesses here in the UK. Carbon reduction challenges, through new processes, digitalisation, technologies, material and supply chain innovation, provide extensive strategic opportunities for ICME to support our professional membership with technical resources and focussed networking opportunities. The UK is home to some of the world’s leading academic institutions, who are pushing the boundaries of fundamental research and full circulation models for metals and other materials. As an institute we already encourage members to consider advanced academic collaboration within industry and this is something we will continue to champion and enable. Advanced manufacturing is about discovering new processes, pathways and approaches for carbon-neutral manufacturing outcomes. The Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) at USC-Aiken will focus on reducing the carbon footprint and moving toward a manufacturing environment where energy associated with production and the feed materials all have a very low or zero carbon footprint. Green technologies for the chemical industry 🧪 In the ‘ShapID’ project, nine Fraunhofer Institutes are developing practical methods and technologies for sustainable, green chemistry. Among other things, an innovative MTP demonstrator has been created that shows that the vision of modular, autonomous functional modules or process equipment assembly (PEA) is becoming a reality. Automation with the standardised Module Type Package (MTP) - a digital description of intelligent process engineering modules - is the key element for the rapid assembly and flexible, sustainable and resource-efficient operation of modular systems. We will be showing the demonstrator at ACHEMA 2024 at the Fraunhofer Chemie-Allianz stand.
