I spent years convincing decision makers to adopt policies. I'd turn up at the Minister's office, present a new report and talk through how they could get it through the Treasury. The new initiative would get announced. We'd celebrate. Surely this time we'd crack the problem. But then the grand plan wouldn't lead to the outcomes we wanted. And we were back to the drawing board. So I started to think differently, guided by brilliant people like Neil Crowther Patrick Watt and Nana Taona Kuo who I have been fortunate to call my boss. People who belived in dignity, justice and equity. Whose policy toolkit was about evidence, creativity and partnership. People who put people at the heart of policy making and built movements to deliver the change. Today I'm working with organisations who live that philosophy, like Impetus - Backing the best who invest in social leaders and their teams over the long term to deliver benchmark beating outcomes, Shelter whose commitment to deeply listening to lived expereince defines their direction, and now The Social Innovation Partnership (TSIP) whose dedication to foster sustained impact by collaboratively influencing the underlying dynamics that contribute to societal issues, breaks every rule in the policy playbook. It is - as they say - a journey. But a better, more inclusive, respectful way of making policy. One that works.

There’s an exciting trend developing; people who don’t come from a “fire background” are being drawn to the fire space, bringing new perspectives, talents and experience to bear on the wildfire crisis. Seth Schalet is a great example. Drawing on decades of business and philanthropy leadership experience, Seth turned the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council into the only such organization to pay its own way, with profitable operations and a full time staff. As he’s done many times with previous ventures, he’s used his keen business skillls and powerful collaborative abilities to turn SCCFC into a brilliantly effective and self sustaining model for other non-profits. Very few people understand the concept of “no margin, no mission” as well as does this dynamic CEO. And as I mention in the show, Seth Schalet is one of the best examples of what it means to be a mensch. (Look it up if you don’t know the term.) Phuthuma Nathi was created in 2006 to offer black South Africans the chance to own an indirect stake in MultiChoice South Africa, a leading video entertainment company in the country. The initial public offer in 2006 and the second public offer in 2007 were both oversubscribed. We are proud to have a truly broad-based empowerment share scheme with more than 80 000 black shareholders from all walks of life. Our shareholders include professionals, helpers, gardeners, teachers, nurses, stokvels and black owned small businesses. Phuthuma Nathi owns 25% of MultiChoice South Africa and has created significant value for our shareholders. Since our scheme started in 2006, our shareholders have received dividends every year. The total dividends paid to date is R13.4 billion.
